The Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra won the first matchup between horse racing’s leading ladies, beating out the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta for Horse of the Year.
“Someday we’ll meet, and we’ll decide at that time who’s the best,” Zenyatta’s owner Jerry Moss said of the possible matchup between the two on the race track.

Horse of the Year candidate Zenyatta is coming out of a brief retirement and will return to the racetrack this year, creating the possibility of a long-awaited showdown with filly Rachel Alexandra.
Race horse owners Jerry and Ann Moss said Zenyatta would retire after becoming the first female to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7 at Santa Anita Park. Zenyatta finished the year winning all five of her races and appeared headed off to breeding with a 14-0 career mark.

2-Time Horse of The Year Curlin Has First Foal
Posted on Friday, January 15th, 2010
Two-time horse of the year Curlin has produced his first foal, a filly out of the broodmare Zophie, a statement from Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky said.
Curlin’s winnings of $10.5 million passed Cigar to make him North America’s richest racehorse in history. Curlin’s horse racing career includes wins at the Preakness Stakes, Jockey Club Classic, Stephen Foster Handicap and Dubai World Cup.
Curlin’s value as a stallion became a subject of a civil case brought against his original owners, lawyers William Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr. They have been sentenced to decades in federal prison and ordered to pay $127 million in restitution for defrauding hundreds of clients in a diet-drug settlement.

2010 Lane’s End Stakes at Turfway Park Moved to March 27
Posted on Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Turfway Park’s 2010 Lane’s End Stakes (G2), a prep race for the Kentucky Derby, has been moved to March 27, a week later than it has traditionally been run.
“We looked at several factors in making the decision to move the Lane’s End,” said Turfway president Robert N. Elliston. “First, running the race five weeks before the Derby instead of the traditional six weeks should mesh with the trend toward giving horses more time between major races. Trainers can more comfortably make the Lane’s End their final prep.”
“In addition, March 27 is also the date of the Dubai World Cup, and the interest that card generates among bettors should mean more eyes will be on the Lane’s End as well.”
