Brother Derek Will Not Run In Haskell Invitational

Santa Anita Derby winner and fourth finisher in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Brother Derek, will not start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 6 because of a recent illness, trainer Dan Hendricks said.

Barbaro Suffers “Potentially Serious” Complications

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro underwent another surgery after developing a “potentially serious” complications to his injured right hind leg. The 3-year-old colt had a titanium plate and a number of screws replaced Late Saturday after developing discomfort in the leg and a “consistently” high temperature.

Pletcher’s English Channel Takes UN Handicap at Monmouth

Todd Pletcher-trained English Channel came off the rail to grab the lead in mid-stretch, and ultimately the victory over Cacique in the $750,000 United Nations Handicap (gr. IT) at Monmouth Park turf Saturday. Ridden by John Velazquez, English Channel accelerated impressively through the lane to stamp himself as the leading distance turf horse in the country. He completed the 1 3/8-mile United Nations around three turns in 2:13 1/5 while winning by three-quarters of a length.

Horse Racing, Casinos In New Jersey Re-Opens

Horseracing and simulcasting in New Jersey are expected to resume on Friday or Saturday after the state’s governor and lawmakers reached a deal Thursday on a new budget, ending nearly a week of crisis and uncertainty in the state. Gov. Jon S. Corzine said the government shutdown that halted Atlantic City casino operations, closed racetracks and threw more than 80,000 people out of work would end in the next 24 to 36 hours.

Australian Jockey Chris Munce arrested by Hong Kong’s anti-corruption watchdogs

Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Chris Munce has fallen foul of one of the strictest racing regimes in the world. He is waiting to hear what charge he may face after being arrested by Hong Kong’s anti-corruption watchdog on Monday night for allegedly providing racing tips to illegal bookmakers in return for them placing bets of $HK600,000 ($103,000) on his behalf.

NJ Budget Crisis Could Scrap United Nations Stakes on Saturday

All live, simulcast, and account wagering in New Jersey stopped operation on Wednesday, as a result of the state’s continuing budget crisis, and jeopardized Monmouth Park’s premier turf race, the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes slated for Saturday. The shutdown is taking a heavy toll on the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns and operates Monmouth and the Meadowlands.

Barbaro’s Cast Changed for Second Time

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) — The cast on Barbaro’s shattered hind leg was replaced for the second time — six weeks after the Kentucky Derby winner sustained a life-threatening injury at the Preakness. "Barbaro is back in his stall and is doing well," said surgeon Dean Richardson, who replaced the cast he had put on Barbaro on June 13. Two bent screws were replaced and three new ones were added across the horse’s pastern joint, Richardson said.
