Pimlico Names Stakes Race for Barbaro

The Maryland Jockey Club has changed the name of the Sir Barton Stakes to the Barbaro Stakes. The 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds is one of eight added money races on the Preakness (gr. Tampa Bay Bans Seven Jockeys Amid Probe

Tampa Bay Downs ruled off seven jockeys effective Dec. 19 because of what management called an “ongoing investigation” being conducted by the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau. Officials at the track on Florida’s Gulf Coast said Jorge G. Bracho, Derek C. Bell, Luis A. Castillo, Jose H. Delgado, Terry D. Houghton, Joseph C. Judice, and Ricardo A. Valdes have been refused access to the facility “for an indefinite period of time based on its rights as a private property owner.”


Oaklawn Park Opens With Record Purses for 2007 Race Meet

Oaklawn Park will run its 56-day race meet from Jan. 19-April 14. It features 27 stakes headed by the $1-million Arkansas Derby (gr. II) on closing day. The total stakes schedule is valued at $4.5 million with record daily average purses of $290,000, up from $275,000 a day this year because of increased revenue from Instant Racing.

Kieran Fallon suspended in France

British jockey Kieren Fallon has been suspended by France Galop, the French racing authority, for testing positive for a prohibited substance.
Doctors found the substance metabolite in Fallon’s system in November, and although the quantity was described as “exceedingly low,” it was still enough to classify it as a strict liability offense.

UK Jockeys Suspended For Race-Fixing

LONDON (AP) — Two jockeys were suspended for 18 months and a former owner and bookmaker was banned for eight years Monday in a British horse racing fixing scandal. Jockeys Brian Reilly and Dean Williams were suspended for informing bookmaker Owen Churchill that their horses were unlikely to win or of ensuring they would not win. Churchill was banned for causing jockeys to break rules.
