Curlin catches Street Sense in last jump to win Preakness Stakes

BALTIMORE - Inexperience may have betrayed Curlin when he suffered the first loss of his career with a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, but the experience gleaned from that race paid off two weeks later when he rallied boldly in the stretch to catch Derby winner Street Sense and capture the 132nd Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico.

Curlin ($8.80), the second choice, stumbled slightly at the start, settled near the back of the pack, and was passed by Street Sense as the field came around the far turn and into the stretch. But he resolutely kept to his task and wore down Street Sense in the final yards to win by a head.

Hard Spun, the Derby runner-up, was another four lengths back in third. C P West was fourth and was followed, in order, by Circular Quay, King of the Roxy, Mint Slewlep, Xchanger, and Flying First Class.

Curlin completed 1 3/16 miles, the shortest of the Triple Crown races, in 1:53.46 on a track rated fast despite rain showers that fell sporadically, beginning a little more than an hour before the start of the race. His time is the equivalent of the Preakness record, 1:53 2/5, shared by Tank’s Prospect (1985) and Louis Quatorze (1996), when the race was timed in fifths of a second instead of hundredths.

Curlin earned $600,000 from a total purse of $1 million.

Robby Albarado, who rode Curlin, bounced back to compete after being thrown from Einstein during an accident in the Dixie Handicap earlier on the card. He scored his first victory in a Triple Crown race, as did Curlin’s trainer, Steve Asmussen.

Preakness Day began with gorgeous weather - just a few random clouds, blue skies, and temperatures in the mid-60s. As the day progressed, however, storm clouds began to accumulate near the track, and it began to rain about 80 minutes before post time for the Preakness.

The rain came down harder, and the temperature started to fall, just as the nine horses were being led over to be saddled. Usually at the Preakness, most horses are saddled in the infield, but this day, seven of the nine were taken to the inside paddock by their trainers. Only Flying First Class and C P West remained in the infield to be saddled before being joined later by the others.

But when the horses came on the track to the strains of “Maryland, My Maryland,” the sun began to peek through the clouds.

Throughout the day, the main track tended to favor horses who were on or near the lead. It was extremely difficult to make up appreciable ground. But the rain may have tightened up the track, which yielded swift fractions in the Preakness.

Street Sense won the Derby two weeks ago at Churchill Downs as the tepid 9-2 favorite against 19 rivals, but was sent off at 6-5 on Saturday against eight opponents. His loss means that the Triple Crown will go unclaimed yet again. It has not been swept since Affirmed in 1978. The current drought is the longest since the Triple Crown was first won by Sir Barton in 1919.

The final leg of the Triple Crown is the 2007 Belmont Stakes on June 9 in New York. Carl Nafzger, the trainer of Street Sense, said he would not go on to the Belmont Stakes. Asmussen said he would consider the 2007 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park for Curlin.

Kentucky Derby betting handle down. Ratings up.

Posted on Thursday, May 10th, 2007

Horse wagering on s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs and its undercard declined for the first time in 16 years, according to figures released by the racetrack.

The horse betting handle was down 0.1 percent on the Kentucky Derby and 4.1 percent on the card, wagering on the Derby and its undercard has grown astronomically over the past decade and a half, fueled by a large rise in the number of wagering outlets and the emergence of account wagering. In many of those years, growth compared to the previous year was in the double digits.

The television rating for the 2007 Kentukcy Derby broadcast on NBC was an 8.3, up 12 percent from last year’s broadcast, according to figures released by NBC on Sunday. The Kentucky Derby race broadcast, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., had a share of 18. Share measures the percentage of televisions in use that were tuned to the broadcast. link to full story

Youbet says TrackNet to blame for decline of Kentucky Dery horse betting handle.

Youbet CEO Charles Champion directed more criticism at the controversial content alliance of Churchill Downs and Magna Entertainment, that the partners in TrackNet Media Group ???ended up shooting not only themselves, but an entire industry.???

Champion said horse racing was going to suffer in the long-term unless resolve can be found in the volatile situation involving wagering platforms which are unwilling to consent to TrackNet???s distribution structure.

???TrackNet Media refused to sell the Derby simulcast to ADWs unless they dropped top content from other tracks,??? said Champion of Youbet???s non-presence in wagering on the May 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) card. ???They presumed to be taking a shot at their competitors. Problem is, they ended up shooting not only themselves, but an entire industry.???

Champion said a drop in all-source wagering on the Derby card tells a big story, noting that last year???s combined $12.5 million handled by Youbet, its off-shore outlet International Racing Group, and TVG Network represented a 7% hole that couldn???t be filled.

???This year, the Derby attracted its biggest TV ratings in 15 years, but somehow, the industry managed to take a 5% increase in audience and turn it into a 4.1% decrease in handle,??? he said.

???This blemish on our business, and this dent in our collective pocketbooks, could have been avoided. Had TVG, Youbet and IRG carried the races . . . the industry could have been heralding a new high point in its distribution methods as well as its fan interest.??? full story

While onshore pari-mutuel organizations continue their squabble - both racetrack owners and operators CDI and Magna and ADW providers Youbet and TVG - offshore racebooks and illegal bookies are servicing the horse bettors’ needs for wagering on big stakes races such as the Kentucky Derby. The 2007 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico (owned by Magna) will be another example of exclusion of the ADW’s and dare we predict another drop in horse betting handle.

Street Sense Wins Kentucky Derby 133

Posted on Monday, May 7th, 2007

Street Sense wins the 133rd running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. The Carl Nafzger trainee will now prepare for Preakness Stakes on May 19, the second jewel of the Triple Crown race.

Making this year???s Kentucky Derby more memorable was its special guest, England???s Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Phillip, who made a visit to the Downs part of her six-day official visit to the US.

Hard Spun finished second while heavy favorite Curlin succumbed to 3rd place at the Run for the Roses. Both horses also confirmed running at the Preakness.
Nafzger was initially resistant to let Street Sense run at Pimlico, but he briefly let his mind wander to a possible sweep of the Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

???As soon as we win the Preakness, we???ll go to the Belmont,??? he said, smiling.

Nafzger has saddled two Preakness starters, including second-place Unbridled in 1990 who gave him his first Run for the Roses victory.

Many of the 20 Kentucky Derby horses will skip the Preakness, including trainer Todd Pletcher???s record-tying five starters: Any Given Saturday, Circular Quay, Cowtown Cat, Sam. P and Scat Daddy. But Pletcher will have a presence in Baltimore with King of the Roxy, second in the Santa Anita Derby. Other possible Preakness Stakes Starters >>
