What Is The Biggest Horse Racing Event Around?
Horse racing is a sport enjoyed by millions worldwide. The Royal Ascot in England and the Dubai Cup in the UAE are prestigious, but the biggest of all horse racing events is the Kentucky Derby.
Held at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Kentucky, the Kentucky Derby is called the “greatest two minutes in sports.” This mile and a quarter race of Thoroughbreds has been run consecutively for 138 years. The two million dollar purse attracts the best horses from around the world. As the first leg in the coveted Triple Crown, the Derby represents the opportunity for a horse to become legendary in racing circles.
The Kentucky Derby is much more than a two minute spectacle. A two week long derby festival in May includes parties, parades and fireworks. Race day sees tens of thousands of spectators filling the infield area as well as packing the stands. With such a long heritage, traditions are important at the Derby. Race fans must have a mint julep and eat burgoo stew. This is the place for ladies show off outlandish hats and attire. Standard at every race is the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home” as horses are paraded before the grandstand.
No other racing event can compare to the Kentucky Derby!
