Becrux Wins $1 Million Woodbine Mile

TORONTO (AP) — Pat Valenzuela’s return to racing was a winning one Sunday when the jockey guided Becrux to a neck victory over Rebel Rebel in the $1 million Woodbine Mile.

Valenzuela, out for two months with a back injury, replaced Corey Nakatani, who hurt his shoulder in a training accident at Santa Anita.

Becrux, bred in Italy, overtook Remarkable News in the stretch and then held off the challenge of Rebel Rebel and won in a photo finish.

Valenzuela said his back felt fine, but added only time will really tell if he’s healthy enough to ride full-time. He started working out horses in the morning about 10 days ago.

“I haven’t been riding for awhile now so we’ll see in a month’s time how it does,” Valenzuela said. “Hopefully it will stay put and I’ll be able to keep doing my exercise routine and keep it strong.”

Becrux, trained by Neil Drysdale, covered the mile on the turf course in 1:33.99 and earned $600,000 for Team

Valor, a syndicate headed up by Barry Irwin. The win was the eighth in 18 career starts for the 4-year-old

gelding.

Becrux paid $18.70, $8 and $5.90. Rebel Rebel returned $7.50 and $6.10, while Ad Valorem was third in the 13-

horse field and paid $5.10.
