Breeders Cup Winner, Dance Smartly, Dies at 19

MILTON, Ontario (AP) – Dance Smartly, who in 1991 became the first Canadian-bred horse to win a Breeders’ Cup race, died after an injury in her paddock. She was 19.

Emma-Jayne Wilson, First Female Jockey to Win Queen’s Plate

Emma-Jayne Wilson became the first female jockey to win the Queen’s Plate when she rode 15-1 longshot Mike Fox to victory Sunday in the first leg of the Canadian triple crown at Woodbine Racetrack. Wilson made her move after the turn, zipping between first Alezzandro and then 6-5 favorite Jiggs Coz to win by half a length.

Becrux Wins $1 Million Woodbine Mile

TORONTO (AP) — Pat Valenzuela’s return to racing was a winning one Sunday when the jockey guided Becrux to a neck victory over Rebel Rebel in the $1 million Woodbine Mile. Valenzuela, out for two months with a back injury, replaced Corey Nakatani, who hurt his shoulder in a training accident at Santa Anita.


Shillelagh Slew’s Prince of Wales Win Means No Canadian Triple Crown

Shillelagh Slew won the $445,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on Sunday after a stewards inquiry bumped first-place finisher Malakoff to fifth for interference down the final stretch. Four horses broke neck-in-neck toward the finish line in the second jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown, with Malakoff pulling away for the apparent victory.


Edenwold Wins Queen’s Plate Canada Triple Crown Race

Edenwold, ridden by Emile Ramsammy, rolled into victory at Sunday’s $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racecourse. The 1 1/4 mile Queen’s Plate is the first race in Canada’s Triple Crown.
