Posted on Thursday, September 4th, 2008

The 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin will take aim at becoming the richest horse in thoroughbred history when he makes his next start in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on September 27.

Coming off a victory in Saratoga Race Course’s Woodward Stakes with 10 wins in 14 starts, Curlin is the second-leading money winning thoroughbred in history with more than $9.79 million, leaving him less than $200,000 behind Cigar ($9.9 million). “The Jockey Club Gold Cup was selected for Curlin in order to continue his legacy as one of American’s greatest thoroughbreds,” said Jess Jackson, the majority owner of Curlin.

Sudan, an Irish-bred of Peintre Celebre, finished fourth in Belmont Park’s Man o’ War Stakes (G1) in his last start July 12, and captured the Golden Gate Fields Turf (G3) before that May 31.
