6 Horse Races Upgraded To Grade 1 In 2009

Two Breeders’ Cup races were among the six 2009 horse races elevated to Grade 1 stakes status by the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.
The $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint and $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile were upgraded from Grade 2 to Grade 1 by the committee, which gave 488 horse races graded-stakes status next year, an increase of seven.
Other horse races bumped to Grade 1 were the Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park, the Pat O’Brien Handicap and Clement L. Hirsch Handicap at Del Mar and the Vinery Madison Stakes at Keeneland.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Go Between Wins Pacific Classic Stakes at Del Mar

Peter Vegso’s favored Go Between gave jockey Garrett Gomez his second million-dollar victory in two days East to West, capturing the $1-million Pacific Classic Stakes (G1), signature event of the summer racing season at Del Mar.
Jockey Garrett Gomez, who won the $1-million Travers Stakes for three-year-olds aboard West Coast-based Colonel John at Saratoga on Saturday, drove Go Between to a neck victory over Well Armed, with Mast Track third and Zappa fourth in a field of 10 older horses.
Go Between accomplished the mile and one-quarter in 2:01.18 and paid $7.60,. $5.60 and $3 while earning a prize of $600,000 with his 8th win in 26 starts. Go Beetween now has earnings of $2,783,880. Since the Pacific Classic is part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” Challenge, Go Between has earned a place in the Breeders’ Cup field for the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday, October 25, at Santa Anita Park.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Whatsthescript Wins Del Mar Mile Handicap at Del Mar

Tommy Town Thoroughbreds’ Irish-bred Whatsthescript, the 2-1 favorite ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, unleashed a devastating rally in the stretch Sunday to win the $400,000 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2), a 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” qualifying event for the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park.
Whatsthescript, trained by John Sadler, won by 3/4 of a length over Bold Chieftain, with Global Hunter third and Daytona fourth in a field of 9 grass race horses.
The Del Mar Handicap winner Whatsthescript ran the mile over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course at Del Mar in a fast 1:32.40 and returned $6, $3.40 and $2.80. Bold Chieftain returned $6.40 and $4.60, while Global Hunter paid $8 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Lewis Michael Wins Pat O’Brien Handicap at Del Mar

Eastern invaders Lewis Michael and jockey Rene Douglas combined to score a major upset Sunday in the $300,000 Pat O’Brien Handicap (G2) at Del Mar as 2007 Eclipse Award winning-sprinter Midnight Lute, the 4-5 favorite, finished a disappointing 10th in the field of 12 race horses.
Lewis Michael, owned by Frank Calabrese and trained by Wayne Catalano, set a record of 1:21.17 for the Pat O’Brien distance of 7 furlongs over Del Mar’s new Polytrack surface and returned $19.20, $9 and $5.80. Since the Pat O’Brien is a 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” qualifying race, Lewis Michael earned a spot in the Breeders’ Cup field for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Sprint which will be renewed Saturday, October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Rebellion paid $7.20 and $5.40, while Barbecue Eddie returned $5.40 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Dearest Trickski Wins Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar

Strongly-supported Dearest Trickski held on tenaciously in the final strides to barely withstand the late challenge of longshot Tiz Elemental and win the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) Sunday at Del Mar.
Dearest Trickski scored her 11th victory in 16 starts and earned $120,000 in the Rancho Bernardo to increase her bankroll to $660,100. Since the Rancho Bernardo is part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Dearest Tricksi also guaranteed herself a place in the Breeders’ Cup field for the the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on Friday, August 24 at Santa Anita.
Second choice in the wagering at 2-1, Dearest Trickski, a daughter of Proudest Roman bred in Florida, ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.17 and returned $6.20, $4.20 and $3.40. Tiz Elemental paid $10.40 and $6.40, while La Tee paid $11.60 to show.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Race Results: Spring House Wins Del Mar Handicap

R.D. Hubbard’s Spring House, the 3-5 favorite under jockey Corey Nakatani, punched his ticket for the Breeders’ Cup Turf on October 25 with a hard-earned triumph Saturday in the 69th running of the $250,000 Del Mar Handicap at the marathon distance of 1 3/8 miles over the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course at Del Mar.
Spring House, a six-year-old gelded son of Chester House bred in Kentucky and trained by Julio Canani, paid $3.40, $2.60 and $2.10 while earning $150,000 with his 7th victory in 33 career efforts. His lifetime bankroll now is $718,284.
Transduction Gold, who was piloted by jockey Jon Court, returned $6.40 and $5, while You Got Me Rocking paid $5.60 to show.

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series of horse races continues at Del Mar August 24, Sunday, with the $1-million Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at 1 1/4 miles for 3-year-olds and up, the $400,000 Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2) at 1 mile on turf for 3-year-olds and up; the $300,000 Pat O’Brien Handicap (G2) at 7 furlongs for 3-year-olds and up; and the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at 6 1/2 furlongs for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares.
Winners of these 4 horse races will automatically become part of the Breeders’ Cup field for the corresponding divisional race in the two-day, fourteen-race, $25-million Breeders’ Cup World Championships, to be held October 24-25 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park.
