Tale of Ekati Prepares For The 2008 Kentucky Derby at Keeneland

Tale of Ekati, one of the 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders and who is owned by Charles Fipke, worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.20 at Keeneland on Wednesday morning, turning in the second-fastest of 11 other works at the distance.
Horse trainer Barclay Tagg plans to ship Tale of Ekati and stablemate Big Truck to Churchill Downs on Saturday, April 26.
Tale of Ekati’s final breeze before the 2008 Kentucky Derby is slated for Tuesday. Tale of Ekati also won the Futurity Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park, home of the 2008 Belmont Stakes, last year.

Big Truck, Tale of Ekati & Other Kentucky Derby Contenders Work at Keeneland

Eric Fein’s 2008 Kentucky Derby contender, Big Truck, worked a half-mile in :48.80 at Keeneland on Tuesday. Horse trainer Barclay Tagg described the move as a “maintenance work,” which he said he generally gives his horses 10 days after their race. Big Truck finished 11th in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) on April 12 in his last start.
Big Truck currently ranks 19th on the 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) graded stakes earnings list with $194,500.
Another one of horse trainer Barclay Tagg’s Kentucky Derby entries, Charles Fipke’s Tale of Ekati, is slated to work five-eighths on Wednesday at Keeneland.

Behindatthebar Wins Coolmore Lexington Stakes April 19 at Keeneland

Behindatthebar thrust himself into the 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) picture Saturday at Keeneland with a come-from-behind victory in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2).
The winner also gave trainer Todd Pletcher another prospect for the Kentucky Derby to be run in two weeks at Churchill Downs. The Pletcher trained Monba and Cowboy Cal finished first and second, respectively, in last week’s $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
The victory improved Behindatthebar’s record to three wins in five starts and increased his career earnings to $277,100. His earnings in graded races–$204,500—rank him in the top 20 among the prospective 2008 Kentucky Derby starters.

Coolmore Lexington Stakes April 19 at Keeneland Draws 11

Southern Equine Stable’s Salute the Sarge, a dual graded stakes winner, heads a field of 11 entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 27th running of the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) for three-year-olds going a mile and a sixteenth on Keeneland’s main track.
With a distance of 1 1/16 miles, the Coolmore Lexington Stakes is the final 2008 Kentucky Derby prep race to be held at Keeneland. The field for Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes, from the rail out, is as follows:

Tomcito Preparing for Coolmore Lexington Stakes at Keeneland April 19

Jet Set Racing Stable’s Tomcito, preparing for Saturday’s $325,000 Coolmore Lexington (G2), one of the last prep races for the 2008 Kentucky Derby, worked three furlongs out of the gate in :34.60 and galloped out a half-mile in :46.80 with Manfreddy Guzman up Tuesday morning at Keeneland.
Tuesday’s work was the second for Tomcito in Kentucky since arriving after his third-place finish in the Florida Derby. Tomcito worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 at Churchill Downs on April 9 as Zanelli wanted to give the son of Street Cry (IRE) a drill over the track for the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Todd Pletcher’s Monba, Cowboy Cal 1-2 in Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland

Monba won the $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) Saturday, April 12, at Keeneland and earned a trip to the 2008 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) in three weeks at Churchill Downs.
Monba was the 8-1 fourth choice in Keeneland’s Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and paid $19.60, $8.60 and $6.60. He improved his record to three wins in five starts and increased his lifetime earnings to $577,534, of which $515,000 has come in graded stakes.
Cowboy Cal took the lead soon after the start under John Velazquez and held on stubbornly to finish second and increase his graded stakes earnings to $207,660. The winner of the Tropical Park Derby (gr. III) on the turf in January paid $8.80 and $6.60.
Ridden by Jamie Theriot, Kentucky Bear, a 27-1 outsider who was making only his third career start, was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $8.20.

Pyro & Cool Coal Man To Race in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 12

Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Pyro and Robert LaPenta’s Cool Coal Man, leading 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders, head a field of 12 horses in Saturday’s $750,000 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
The 1 1/8-mile Toyota Blue Grass Stakes is one of the final major preps on the spring calendar for the May 3, 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1).
