Monmouth Park ready to take center stage on the 2007 BC World Championship

Posted on Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Thoroughbred racing biggest day is almost around the corner and New Jersey is ready to take part in the history as the 2007 Breeders’ Cup World Championship races jump-starts on October 26 and 27.

The 137-year old Monmouth Park racetrack received a $30 Million make-over in last year. The re-design of the grass course for the 2006 season brought with it a new, second chute to accommodate 5 1/2 furlong sprint races. Turf races can be run along the hedge, or with the portable rail out 12 feet (dubbed the “Haskell Course”), 24 feet (”Monmouth Course”) or 36 feet (”Lennox Course”). The main track is a one mile dirt oval with chutes for 6 furlong and 1 1/4 mile races. The turf course is seven furlongs in circumference, with a diagonal chute for races between 1 mile and 1 1/8 miles.

A record $23 million in purses will be on the line at the Breeders’ Cup, and many more dollars will change hands based on the results. Last year, more than $134 million was bet on the Breeders’ Cup, more than on the Kentucky Derby.

The Breeders’ Cup will draw 45,000 hard-core horse-racing fans, including a mix of billionaires, $2 bettors, and hordes of handicappers, the gamblers who are the lifeblood of horse racing and view the Breeders’ Cup races as an ultimate test of their skill.

Lawyer Ron Heads Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park

Posted on Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Lawyer Ron will look to add a fifth graded stakes victory to his resume when he takes on four others in the $150,000 Salvator Mile Handicap (gr. III) at Monmouth Park June 23.

The 4-year-old Langfuhr colt, owned by Hines Racing and trained by Todd Pletcher, has been assigned highweight of 121 pounds in what will be his fourth start of the year. He comes into the race off a solid third-place finish in the May 28 Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I), and prior to that start, took the April 7 Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II).

Lawyer Ron’s main competition appears to be a stakes-winning son of A.P. Indy named Indy Wind, who will carry 119 pounds. Amy Tarrant owns and trains the 5-year-old chestnut horse, who took the May 28 Frisk Me Now Stakes at Monmouth in his last start.

“He has his best shot to win a graded stakes at this track,” said Tarrant. “We’ve learned that he hates to ship, and that he loves Monmouth.”

Stakes winner Gottcha Gold is seeking to avenge his loss in the Frisk Me Now, after finishing second by 1 3/4 lengths. Edward Plesa Jr. trains the homebred Coronado’s Quest colt for Centaur Farms. The 4-year-old colt, who won two stakes races in 2006, will carry 117 pounds.

Both Chucker and Take The Bluff are seeking their first stakes victory and have been assigned 117 pounds. Richard Dutrow Jr. trains Chucker for Stronach Stables, while Richard Violette Jr. trains Take the Bluff for Red Diamond Stable, Peter Kizenko, and Patrick Mackay.
Salvator Mile Race Entries with Jockeys:

1. Indy Wind, Mario Madrid, 119
2. Gottcha Gold, Charles Lopez, 117
3. Lawyer Ron, John Velazquez, 121
4. Take the Bluff, Jose Lezcano, 117
5. Chucker, Eddie Castro, 117
