Loose Shoe of Big Brown May Be The Cause Of His Belmont Stakes Performance
Posted on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008
According to a report in Newsday, Big Brown’s owner, Michael Iavarone, said a loose shoe might be the reason for the colt’s miserable performance in the Belmont Stakes last June 7 at Belmont Park.
Michael Iavarone, the co-president of IEAH Stables, told the newspaper he was e-mailed photos Saturday night that showed a slightly dislodged shoe on Big Brown’s right hind hoof.
“The picture shocked me,” Michael Iavarone said. “When the shoe spread, a nail could have been pinching him. Or he could have been stepping on a hot nail, which would have been worse. I’m guessing the nail went back in but not in the same spot. Or it could have been a loose shoe, which would be like trying to run with a wobbly cleat.”

Jockey Kent Desormeaux: It Just Wasn’t Big Brown’s Day
Posted on Saturday, June 14th, 2008
Jockey Kent Desormeaux still can’t figure out what went wrong in Big Brown’s last-place finish in the 2008 Belmont Stakes last June 7 at Belmont Park.
“Regardless of whether I had to earn it or not, I don’t think it would have mattered what kind of trip I had, it just wasn’t Big Brown’s day,” jockey Kent Desormeaux said Saturday after accepting the trophy for his Kentucky Derby victory at Churchill Downs.
Earlier this week, Big Brown’s trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. questioned jockey Kent Desormeaux’s ride and his actions following the Belmont Stakes loss, but Desormeaux said they are on even terms now.

Belmont Stakes Day-After Notes
Posted on Sunday, June 8th, 2008
Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito stood outside Barn 12 at Belmont Park and happily reported that Da’ Tara, upset winner of the 140th Belmont Stakes over Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown, came out of the race in great shape, along with his stablemate, Anak Nakal, who dead-heated for third with Ready’s Echo.
Horse trainer Nick Zito said both horses would be returning to Saratoga this week and pointed toward a summer campaign.
“Da’ Tara, obviously the main goal is the Travers ($1 million, Grade 1, August 23, 1 1/4 miles, Saratoga Race Course),” said Zito. “I learned one thing, Da’ Tara likes to be close to the pace. He broke his maiden going wire-to-wire. So, probably the Jim Dandy (Grade 2, 1 1/8th miles, July 27, Saratoga) and the Travers.”

Casino Drive Scratched Off The 2008 Belmont Stakes
Posted on Saturday, June 7th, 2008
Belmont Stakes hopeful Casino Drive has been scratched from the 2008 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park due to a bruised left hind hoof, according to the Schenectady Gazette.
Considered the main threat to foil Big Brown’s bid at winning the Triple Crown in the final leg, Casino Drive seemed to be healthy during Saturday morning’s workout. But according to the report, the race horse appeared to be favoring the hoof after returning to the stables.
Casino Drive was listed at 7-2 on the morning line in the Belmont Stakes and was supposed to be ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Edgar Prado.
Belmont Stakes post time is 6:25 pm EDT.

Casino Drive Has Bruised Hoof; No Plans To Scratch From Belmont Stakes
Posted on Friday, June 6th, 2008
Belmont Stakes contender Casino Drive has a bruised hoof but there are no plans to scratch the horse from the 2008 Belmont Stakes (post time 6:25 pm) on Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park.
The 3-year-old colt skipped his morning workout Friday after his trainer noticed Casino Drive wasn’t walking normally.
Nobutaka Tada, racing manager for the Japanese-bred colt’s connections, said the left hind hoof will be treated with ice and heat. “He probably stepped on something,” Tada said. “He looks fine, he has a good appetite. He’s not lame.”
The early second-choice behind Triple Crown favorite Big Brown, Casino Drive won his American debut on the May 10 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park

Belmont Stakes Notes June 5
Posted on Thursday, June 5th, 2008
The unfamiliar, if not unorthodox, training of Casino Drive continued Thursday after the mid-morning break at Belmont Park.
The Mineshaft colt is out to become the third consecutive Belmont Stakes winner out of the mare, Better Than Honour, when he goes to post Saturday afternoon in the 140th running of the $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1). He is also out to ruin Big Brown’s bid to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.
Temperatures are predicted to top the 90-degree mark on Saturday, but trainer Rick Dutrow added the heat to a list of things he says will not affect undefeated Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, who will try for the Triple Crown.
