Breeders’ Cup Challenge Adds 4 Horse Races

The Breeders’ Cup announced today that 4 horse races have been added to the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge series.
Three of the 4 added Breeders’ Cup Challenge races are automatic qualifiers for the new $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon at 1 1/2 miles for 3-year-olds and up. The “win and you’re in” horse races for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon are:
- Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park on July 19.
- Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar on July 30.
- Turfway Park Fall Championship (G3) at Turfway Park on September 9.
While the 1-mile Tiznow Stakes at Louisiana Downs on September 20 is the “win and you’re in” qualifying horse race for the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Horse Racing Fans Asked To Vote For Top 25 Breeders’ Cup Moments

For 24 years, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships have given thoroughbred racing some of its greatest moments. This year, the Breeders’ Cup is celebrating its 25th running and they want horse racing fans to decide which moments from those historic races are the greatest off all-time.
Below are some of the Breeders’ Cup moments you can choose from:
- 1984 Breeders’ Cup Classic: Wild Again prevails over Slew o’ Gold and Gate Dancer.
- 1984 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile: Chief’s Crown wins first Breeders’ Cup race.
- 1985 Breeders’ Cup Turf: Pebbles defeats a stellar field of male rivals.

Emirates Airline Becomes Title Sponsor of $3 Million Breeders’ Cup Turf

Breeders’ Cup and Emirates Airline today announced a renewal of their sponsorship agreement through which Emirates, the world’s fastest-growing intercontinental airline based in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), will become title sponsor of the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf at the 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The 25th Breeders’ Cup World Championships, thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious event, consisting of 14 horse races and $25.5 million in purses, will be held on Friday, October 24, and Saturday, October 25, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.
As a part of the new agreement, Emirates will also continue as title sponsor of the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Ladies’ Day on Day 1 of Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships

The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will card all five of its races for female horses on the first day of the 2-day event, Friday, October 24 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. This is the first time a major thoroughbred event in North America has focused an entire day on female horse racing. Purses on Friday amount to $8 million, more than doubling last year’s Breeders’ Cup Friday purses.
In its 25th running, the Breeders’ Cup now has a total purse of $25.5 million. There will be nine Breeders’ Cup races on Saturday, October 25, seven of which are open o both male and female thoroughbreds.
The Breeders’ Cup also announced that it has renamed the Breeders’ Cup Distaff to the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. The Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic will be the premier race on the Breeders’ Cup Friday program.

Breeders’ Cup Challenge Expands to 49 Races

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge, a series of automatic qualifying races for the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, will be expanded from 24 to a minimum of 49 races at 12 of North America’s premier racing venues in 2008, Breeders’ Cup announced today.
The expanded Breeders’ Cup Challenge will now include 6 races at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Other new markets and tracks for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge include Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington; Suffolk Downs in Boston; Delaware Park in Wilmington, Delaware; Calder Race Course near Miami; and Monmouth Park in Oceanport, New Jersey.
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races will begin on July 5 with races from Monmouth Park, host of last year’s Breeders’ Cup.

Santa Anita Park To Host 2009 Breeders’ Cup

For the first time in its history, the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will be held at the same site for two consecutive years, as officials of Breeders’ Cup Limited announced today that Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, host of this year’s event, has also been selected to host the 2009 Breeders’ Cup.

3 New Races Added For Breeders’ Cup 2008

There are 3 new races to look forward to on Breeders’ Cup 2008 as officials of Breeders’ Cup Limited announced Monday, December 10, the addition of three new Breeders’ Cup World Championships races in 2008, increasing the event to a record 14 races and raising total purses to an all-time high of $25.5 million. The 25th Breeders’ Cup will be held on October 24-25 at the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calififornia.
The new Breeders’ Cup World Championships races, which will be run on Breeders’ Cup Friday, October 24, are: the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint for 3-year-olds and up to be run in 6 1/2 furlongs on turf; $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf for 2-year-old fillies to be run in 1 mile on turf; and the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon for 3-year-olds and up to be run in 1 1/2 miles.
The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint will be contested on Santa Anita’s signature El Camino Real “down the hill” turf course, with a maximum of 14 starters. The Juvenile Fillies Turf will be limited to 12 starters. The institution of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon boosts total purses for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races to $25.5 million.
The addition of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint comes less than one year after the establishment of three new Breeders’ Cup $1 million races – the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf – which were all held for the first time at Monmouth Park at the 24th Breeders’ Cup on Friday, October 26. Next year, those three races and the new Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon will increase Breeders’ Cup Friday purses past $5 million.
Friday’s program of six Breeders’ Cup races will be followed on Saturday, October 25, by eight more Breeders’ Cup races worth $20 million headed by the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf.
