The Preakness Stakes 2009 Results & Payouts: Filly Rachel Alexandra Won By 1 Length
Posted on Saturday, May 16th, 2009
Kentucky Oaks winner Rachel Alexandra lived up to her star billing, becoming the first filly in 85 years to win the Preakness Stakes 2009 at 1 3/16 miles.
With jockey Calvin Borel in the irons, Rachel Alexandra became the first filly since Nellie Morse in 1924 to win the Preakness Stakes, second jewel in US horse racing’s Triple Crown, holding off a charge by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.
Jockey Calvin Borel had piloted 50-1 shot Mine That Bird to the Kentucky Derby triumph, but elected to switch to Rachel Alexandra for the one million-dollar Preakness when new owner Jess Jackson decided to test her against colts.

The Preakness Stakes 2009: I Call ‘em the Way I See ‘em
Posted on Friday, May 15th, 2009
The 134th Preakness Stakes 2009 features 13 Preakness horses going 1 3/16 miles on Saturday. I’m classifying them in several categories from those 3-year-olds that stand little chance to those horses that wouldn’t surprise.
My Preakness Picks
Rachel Alexandra: Which came first the odds or the post-position draw? The morning line: 8-5. Won’t be that low at race time. The post: unlucky 13. No horse ever triumphed from there. Will it make a difference? Could be since the pace should be contested. Don’t leave her out of the exotics.

Behindatthebar Scratched Off The Preakness Stakes
Posted on Friday, May 16th, 2008
According to a Maryland Jockey Club official, Behindatthebar, who drew post 5, has been scratched from Saturday’s Preakness Stakes (gr. I) because of a bruised left front foot Friday morning at Belmont Park.
The scratch of the son of Forest Wildcat from the second leg of the Triple Crown, leaves a field of 12 for the $1 million Preakness this Saturday, May 17, at Pimlico Race Course. The 1-2 morning line favorite Big Brown will now break from the 6th post. A leading 15 Preakness winners have come from the 6th post.
Carrying 126 pounds, the updated Preakness entries, from the rail out with jockeys and morning line odds:

A Dozen Challengers Will Try to Upset Big Brown
Posted on Thursday, May 15th, 2008
By GREG MELIKOV
Big Brown was installed as the heavy odds-on early favorite in the Preakness 133 that attracted a surprising number of challengers — 12.
The last 13-horse Preakness field came during the past decade and both winners of the Kentucky Derby prevailed: War Emblem in ‘02 and Charismatic in ‘99.
Ironically, they posted slower speed figures than in Louisville. Four other Kentucky Derby winners stepped up in Baltimore and their speed figures climbed.
Big Brown, 1-2, will break from post 7, which has produced five winners in the past 19 years. He’s 13 slots closer toward the rail than he was in the Kentucky Derby. The son of Boundary and Gayego are the only two from this year’s Run for the Roses.

Preakness Stakes Notes: Big Brown Works
Posted on Thursday, May 15th, 2008
With regular exercise rider Michelle Nevin aboard and dozens of still and video cameras recording every step, the Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown galloped 1 1/2 miles Thursday morning at Pimlico.
“It went good,” trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said. “I was very happy with it. He was comfortable, cool, relaxed, galloped good. We’re as happy as we can be right now.”
Dutrow said he is holding up well to the pressure of bringing the Kentucky Derby winner to Baltimore to compete in the Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown, the 2008 Preakness Stakes 133.
