Belmont Stakes Day-After Notes

Posted on Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Belmont Stakes 140 Winner Da' Tara, Race HorseHall of Fame trainer Nick Zito stood outside Barn 12 at Belmont Park and happily reported that Da’ Tara, upset winner of the 140th Belmont Stakes over Triple Crown hopeful Big Brown, came out of the race in great shape, along with his stablemate, Anak Nakal, who dead-heated for third with Ready’s Echo.

Horse trainer Nick Zito said both horses would be returning to Saratoga this week and pointed toward a summer campaign.

“Da’ Tara, obviously the main goal is the Travers ($1 million, Grade 1, August 23, 1 1/4 miles, Saratoga Race Course),” said Zito. “I learned one thing, Da’ Tara likes to be close to the pace. He broke his maiden going wire-to-wire. So, probably the Jim Dandy (Grade 2, 1 1/8th miles, July 27, Saratoga) and the Travers.”

Belmont Stakes Notes June 5

Posted on Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The unfamiliar, if not unorthodox, training of Casino Drive continued Thursday after the mid-morning break at Belmont Park.

The Mineshaft colt is out to become the third consecutive Belmont Stakes winner out of the mare, Better Than Honour, when he goes to post Saturday afternoon in the 140th running of the $1 million Belmont Stakes (G1). He is also out to ruin Big Brown’s bid to become racing’s 12th Triple Crown winner.

Temperatures are predicted to top the 90-degree mark on Saturday, but trainer Rick Dutrow added the heat to a list of things he says will not affect undefeated Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, who will try for the Triple Crown.

Trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. Sure Big Brown Will Win The Belmont Stakes

Posted on Friday, May 30th, 2008

As talented and physically imposing a presence as Belmont Stakes and Triple Crown contender Big Brown is, trainer Richard Dutrow, Jr. seems just as impressed by the colt’s personality and intelligence.

According to New York Stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes, Belmont Stakes entries to challenge Big Brown will be Anak Nakal, Casino Drive, Denis of Cork, Icabad Crane, Macho Again, Tale of Ekati and Tomcito, and possibly Ready’s Echo or Behindatthebar.

Dutrow reiterated he did not think any of those Belmont Stakes contenders were the equal of Big Brown and predicted nothing could stand in his way.

The 140th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes will be race 11 of Belmont Park’s 13-race card on Saturday, June 7. Belmont Stakes post time is 6:25 pm EST.
