Kentucky Derby Creates New Qualifying Race, Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes
Posted on Thursday, September 18th, 2008
Churchill Downs has partnered with Kempton Park Racecourse in England to create the $150,000 Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile race over Kempton’s synthetic surface that will guarantee the winner a spot in next year’s Kentucky Derby.
The move is a departure from the usual Triple Crown nominating process. The entrants to the Kentucky Derby have traditionally been selected on graded stakes earnings. The winner of the Kentucky Derby Challenge will get an automatic spot in the Kentucky Derby field if the owner agrees to pay the entry fee and shipping costs.
The only foreign-based horse to win the Kentucky Derby was Canonero II in 1971, and overseas challengers have been few and far between in recent years.

Horse punter wins Scoop Six ??400k
Posted on Friday, July 20th, 2007
A lucky horse punter in the UK scored an amazing winning horse wager - Scoop Six - worth 427,434 pounds sterling! And the amazing part is this British horse bettor made this wager while on a shopping spree with his wife and family. The brilliant but bored punter scooted away to a nearby high street bookmaker shop and placed his Scoop Six bet. And the rest, as they say… is HISTORY!
Bored shopper scoops ??400k winning betA canteen worker has scooped more than ??400,000 after placing a bet during a shopping trip with his wife.
Adam Phillips, from Littlehampton, became bored while touring the shops with his wife and son so stepped into a bookies he spotted.
But his moment of gambling relief paid off - when his ??2 six-horse accumulator rolled in later that afternoon.
The family’s dreams of moving to Spain could come true after the lucky break last Saturday.
And the lucky punter could become even richer if his last horse comes in to make it seven out of seven this weekend.
Mr Phillips won ??427,000 after placing a Scoop Six wager while his wife Sue and their young son Charlie enjoyed the carnival in Littlehampton’s High Street.
With an eye for the races he popped into the nearby William Hill shop, unaware he was on the verge of picking six winners.
And while his ??427,434 windfall may be the stuff of dreams, he stands to net another ??183,186 if he can select the winner of the Scoop Six Bonus Race at Newbury on Saturday. story link
