The Preakness Winner Rachel Alexandra To Make 2010 Debut In The New Orleans Ladies at Fair Grounds

The 2009 Horse of the Year and Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will face four rivals when she makes her first start in six months in Saturday’s $200,000 New Orleans Ladies at the Fair Grounds.
The New Orleans Ladies Stakes field with jockeys and weight in post position order:
- Fighter Wing under jockey Corey Lanerie carries 117 lbs.
- Rachel Alexandra under jockey Calvin Borel, 123 lbs.
- Zardana under jockey David Flores, 121 lbs.
- Unforgotten under jockey Miguel Mena, 117 lbs.
- Clear Sailing under jockey Shane Sellers, 117 lbs.

Horse Racing Results: Misremembered Wins The Santa Anita Handicap March 6

Misremembered, ridden by jockey Martin Garcia, won by a half-length over fast-closing Neko Bay in Saturday’s $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap racing 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.20, the 4-year-old horse’s first victory at the distance. He paid $10.80, $6 and $4.40 at 4-1 odds.
Jockey Martin Garcia had worked Misremembered during morning training hours, and race horse trainer Bob Baffert has been winning horse races with him at a 27-percent clip lately.
“I feel amazing, man!” Garcia said. “This is the first time I rode in the Big ‘Cap and I had the opportunity to make it to the winner’s circle. Bob told me to give him a clear break and just not fight him. When my horse got to the lead, I knew I still had a lot of horse.”

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Crisp Wins The Santa Anita Oaks March 6

Michael Talla’s probable for the 2010 Kentucky Derby field, Crisp, under jockey Joel Rosario, won Saturday’s $250,000 Santa Anita Oaks (G1) by a neck over All Due Respect at Santa Anita Park.
Trained by John Sadler, Crisp raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.50 and paid $13.60, $8 and $2.80. All Due Respect, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez returned $8.20 and $3.20.? 1-2 horse wagering favorite Blind Luck with jockey Rafael Bejarano aboard was another neck back in third after rallying from seventh showing $2.10.
Warren’s Jitterbug finished fourth in the Santa Anita Oaks followed by Cozi Rosie, Zilva and Riviera Chic. Sister Dawn was scratched.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Alphie’s Bet Wins The Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park March 6

One of the hopeful Kentucky Derby entries, Alphie’s Bet, won the $150,000 Sham Stakes by 2 lengths on Saturday at Santa Anita Park, helping him establish his credentials for the Kentucky Derby.
Ridden by jockey Alex Solis, Alphie’s Bet ran 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.72 on Santa Anita’s synthetic Pro-Ride surface.
Setsuko was second as the 5-2 horse wagering favorite and The Program, trained by Hall of Fame race horse trainer Bob Baffert, was another head back in third in the Sham Stakes field of 10 colts.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Awesome Act Wins The Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct March 6

English import Awesome Act took a major step forward on the Triple Crown trail Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack, charging to an impressive victory over 9 other Kentucky Derby hopefuls to take the $250,000 Gotham Stakes (G3) in his first start on dirt.
Ridden by Eclipse Award-winning jockey Julien Leparoux, the son of 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Awesome Again stayed well off fractions of 22.85 and 46.60 set by Wow Wow Wow, moved up willingly four-wide on the turn and then powered to the front in midstretch for a 1 1/4-length win over Yawanna Twist.
“He did everything perfect,” said jockey Julien Leparoux of the colt, who despite having only run on turf and synthetic surfaces was sent off as the 5-2 horse betting favorite.

Eclipse Awards Winners: Rachel Alexandra Horse of the Year

The Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra won the first matchup between horse racing’s leading ladies, beating out the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta for Horse of the Year.
“Someday we’ll meet, and we’ll decide at that time who’s the best,” Zenyatta’s owner Jerry Moss said of the possible matchup between the two on the race track.
Voters chose Rachel Alexandra for the year-end honor at the Eclipse Awards on Monday night at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The first filly to win the Preakness in 85 years received 130 votes to 99 for Zenyatta in one of the tightest, most widely debated competitions in years.

Horse of the Year Candidate Zenyatta Expected To Race This Year

Horse of the Year candidate Zenyatta is coming out of a brief retirement and will return to the racetrack this year, creating the possibility of a long-awaited showdown with filly Rachel Alexandra.
Race horse owners Jerry and Ann Moss said Zenyatta would retire after becoming the first female to win the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 7 at Santa Anita Park. Zenyatta finished the year winning all five of her races and appeared headed off to breeding with a 14-0 career mark.
After watching Zenyatta gallop at Hollywood Park on Saturday, Moss consulted with race horse trainer John Shirreffs and announced that the 6-year-old daughter of Street Cry will run in 2010 opening an opportunity for a showdown with the Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra.
