Horse Racing Results: Zardana Upsets Rachel Alexandra in New Orleans Ladies Stakes at Fair Grounds

SBG  Global RacebookHorse of the Year and the Preakness Stakes winner Rachel Alexandra lost to Brazilian-bred Zardana, ridden by jockey David Flores, by 3/4 of a length in Saturday’s $200,000 New Orleans Ladies Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

“She was basically beat when that other horse (Zardana) went by her — but she didn’t quit,” said Rachel Alexandra’s jockey Calvin Borel after the race. “She dug in and fought right back and stayed with the winner the rest of the way. That’s the kind of racehorse she is. My little filly tried her heart out. She just needed the race, that’s all.”

Owned by Arnold Zetcher, trained by John Shirreffs, Zardana began her career with 3 straight wins at Hipodromo da Gavea in Brazil, has now expanded her unbeaten streak on a dirt surface to 4.

Horse Racing Results: Zenyatta Wins The Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap at Santa Anita

SBG    Global RacebookThe Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta extended her horse racing career wins to 15 when she won the $250,000 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap by a length at Santa Anita Park March 13.

Six-year-old mare Zenyatta trailed the Santa Margarita field of 7 rivals going 1 1/8 miles in her season debut before unleashing her trademark late run to win under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

Zenyatta was timed in 1:48.20 on the synthetic surface and paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10 as the overwhelming 1-5 horse wagering favorite in her first race in four months.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Sidney’s Candy Wins The San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Online Horse BettingOne of race horse trainer John Sadler’s Kentucky Derby entries, Sidney’s Candy, won Santa Anita Park’s $150,000 San Felipe Stakes by half a length on Saturday, sending 3-year-old rival Caracortado to his first loss in 6 races.

Sidney’s Candy covered 1 1/16 miles–the longest he’d ever run–on Santa Anita’s synthetic surface in 1:42.30 under jockey Joe Talamo.

Sidney’s Candy paid $9.60, $5.20 and $3.20. Interactif returned $6.60 and $3.20, while Caracortado was another 1 1/2 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 as the horse wagering favorite.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Lookin At Lucky Wins The Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park

SBG  Global RacebookOne of Bob Baffert’s Kentucky Derby contenders, Lookin At Lucky recovered from a hard bump in the backstretch and won by a head over Noble’s Promise in Saturday’s $300,000 Rebel Stakes on March 13 at Oaklawn Park.

In his first race since December, Lookin At Lucky was four wide in the turn for home and outran Noble’s Promise. Dublin finished third, three lengths back. In the backstretch, Lookin At Lucky and Noble’s Promise bumped, but both had cleared most of the field by the top of the stretch.

Lookin At Lucky paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.20 as he raced the 1 1/16-mile Rebel Stakes in 1:43.06. Noble’s Promise paid $4.00 and $2.60 and Dublin paid $2.40.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Results: Odysseus Wins The Tampa Bay Derby

Online Horse BettingOdysseus rallied from between horses in deep stretch Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs to win the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G3), one of the Kentucky Derby prep races, by a nose over Schoolyard Dreams while horse betting favorite Super Saver was third.

Trained by Thomas Albertrani and ridden by Rajiv Maragh, Odysseus covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.31 while winning by a head bob at the finish line. It was the closest finish in the Tampa Bay Derby’s 30 runnings.

Kentucky Derby hopefuls Odysseus paid $6.00, $3.40 and $2.40. Schoolyard Dreams paid $5.00 and $2.80 and Super Saver paid $2.40.

Aqueduct Cancels March 13 Horse Racing Card

SBG  Global RacebookDue to rain and wind, live racing has been cancelled at Aqueduct Racetrack for Saturday, March 13. The facility will be open for simulcasting, and telephone and internet horse wagering will be available.

Included in the simulcast menu are the 2010 debuts of the Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta, with scheduled post times of 6:15 and 6:40 p.m. EST, respectively.

The Kentucky Derby 2010 prep race, $100,000 Cicada (G3) for 3-year-old fillies, originally scheduled to be run today at Aqueduct, will now be run next Saturday, March 20 on a card including the $65,000 Kings Point for older New York-breds.

Zenyatta Arrived at Santa Anita For The Santa Margarita Handicap

Online Horse BettingBeeders’ Cup Classic winner Zenyatta has arrived at Santa Anita Park for final preparations ahead of her return to horse racing in the $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap at 1 1/8 miles where she has been assigned high weight of 127 pounds as the the 1-9 horse betting favorite.

Zenyatta arrived Thursday morning by van from her home base across town at Hollywood Park. Undefeated in 14 career races, the 6-year-old mare was scheduled to walk in Santa Anita’s paddock between races later in the day.

Zenyatta was runner-up in the Horse of the Year balloting to filly Rachel Alexandra, who will make her season debut Saturday in New Orleans.
