2005 Preakness & Belmont Winner Afleet Alex Retires

Posted on Friday, December 2nd, 2005

Afleet Alex, winner of the Preakness and Belmont Stakes in 2005, was officially retired Thursday because of a new injury discovered before he was shipped to Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Afleet Alex’s gritty recovery to win the Preakness after nearly crumpling to the dirt was a dazzling highlight in the colt’s career. The frightening collisio, also may have played a role in his early retirement.

Another ankle injury had already sidelined Afleet Alex since his June 11 victory in the Belmont. His enduring injury also caused him to miss the $4 million Breeders’ Cup Classic in October.

Trainer Tim Ritchey had hoped to run the horse at the one million-dollar Sunshine Millions Classic on January 28 at Santa Anita.

Afleet Alex recorded eight wins in 12 starts and earnings of 2,765,800 dollars. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby but went on to win the final two jewels of the Triple Crown.

At the Preakness, Afleet Alex won despite nearly falling to the track after a collision with Scrappy T in the final turn.

He and jockey Jeremy Rose persevered in one of the sports most memorable moments of the year.
