2009 Breeders’ Cup Pre-Entries Announced
Posted on Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
A total of 166 race horses, including 10 former Breeders’ Cup winners, were pre-entered for the 14 Breeders’ Cup races on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park. That’s down from last year’s record of 180 horses.
Undefeated Zenyatta was pre-entered in both the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic and the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.
Other Breeders’ Cup Classic pre-entries include Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, the Belmont and Travers Stakes winner Summer Bird, Pacific Classic winner Richard’s Kid, trained by Bob Baffert, and Quality Road, trained by Todd Pletcher. Quality Road, an early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, missed the race because of an injury.
Last year, European horses won five Breeders’ Cup races, including the 1-2 finish of Raven’s Pass and Henrythenavigator in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. This year’s 37 European pre-entries are six more than last year, with Irishman Aidan O’Brien the only trainer with two Breeders’ Cup Classic entries.
Goldolphin Racing, the Dubai-based stable of Sheik Mohammad, has a leading 18 Breeders’ Cup pre-entries, including 17 trained by Saeed bin Suroor. Todd Pletcher has 12.
Race horse trainer Bob Baffert will go for his third consecutive win in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Zensational, and his second straight win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Lookin at Lucky.
Hall of Fame race horse trainer Bobby Frankel has three Breeders’ Cup contenders, including Proviso in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. He’s been away from his stable much of the year with an undisclosed illness.
Zenyatta is one of a record 10 defending or former Breeders’ Cup winners among the pre-entries. The others are: Ventura (Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint); Forever Together (Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf); Maram (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf); Muhannak (Breeders’ Cup Marathon); Desert Code (Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint); Goldikova (Breeders’ Cup Mile); Midshipman (Breeders’ Cup Juvenile); Conduit (Breeders’ Cup Turf) and Red Rocks (2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf).
If Zenyatta’s owners opt for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, her stablemate Life is Sweet was pre-entered in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic, along with Alabama winner Careless Jewel and Beldame winner Music Note.
Composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber owns 4-year-old filly Dar Re Mi, who was pre-entered in both the $3-million Breeders’ Cup Turf and the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
A maximum of 14 Breeders’ Cup starters are allowed in each of the Breeders’ Cup races, except for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, which are limited to 12 Breeders’ Cup entries.
Six of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races were oversubscribed, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic with 16 horses. For those races, Breeders’ Cup fields are chosen based on three factors: Breeders’ Cup 2009 Challenge winners; a points system; and a selection committee after the first seven starters have been determined.
