2009 Haskell Invitational News: Papa Clem Arrives at Monmouth Park; Belmont Stakes Winner Summer Bird En Route
Posted on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009
With weeks away from the $1-million Haskell Invitational (G1) on August 2, the 3-year-olds are on the move.
Arkansas Derby winner Papa Clem, who ran sixth in the Preakness his last start, arrived at Monmouth Park Wednesday morning after shipping from California. The 3-year-old colt owned by Bo Hirsch and trained by Gary Stute, Papa Clem, is pointing for the $150,000 Long Branch Stakes on July 11 as his prep for the Haskell at 1 1/8 miles.
The son of Smart Strike finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby after winning the Arkansas Derby (G2) at Oaklawn Park. Papa Clem went back to his Santa Anita base after the Preakness and has turned in a string of sharp morning workouts over the synthetic strip there.
Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, after running sixth in the Kentucky Derby, will start the long journey from Louisiana Downs to Monmouth Park by van on Wednesday night, race horse trainer Tim Ice said.
“It will be a little shorter than the van ride to New York from here,” Tim Ice said Wednesday morning, “probably about 20-21 hours.”
Race horse trainer Tim Ice said he planned to stop off at Churchill Downs Thursday so the Birdstone colt Summer Bird would not have to travel during the hottest part of the day, and he expected to arrive on the MonmouthPark backside early Friday morning.
Summer Bird will breeze up to the Haskell 2009, getting to know the Monmouth main track.
