Arkansas Derby, Blue Grass Stakes Attracts Kentucky Derby Hopefuls
Posted on Thursday, April 12th, 2007
Street Sense was made the 4-5 favorite Wednesday by track oddsmaker Mike Battaglia for the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass Stakes running at the Keeneland Race Track, which will be run over Polytrack for the first time.
Great Hunter, who defeated Street Sense over Keeneland’s synthetic surface last year in the Breeders’ Cup Futurity, was the second choice at 9-5.
Meanwhile, Zanjero, at 8-1, drew the No. 1 post. Also entered were Dominican and Teuflesberg, both at 10-1, and Love Dubai and Time Squared, both at 30-1.
Over at Hot Springs, Arkansas, unbeated horse Curlin drew post no. 2 and was named favorite for the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park.
Curlin has only two career starts, but both were impressive victories. The chestnut colt won last month’s Rebel at Oaklawn by 5 lengths, following a 12 3/4 -length romp in his debut at Gulfstream Park in February.
The Arkansas Derby field, from the rail out: Delightful Kiss (10-1), Curlin, Officer Rocket, Going Ballistic (12-1), Flying First Class, Storm in May (15-1), Olympic Chief (50-1), Slew by Slew (20-1), For You Reppo (6-1) and Deadly Dealer.
