Atlantic City Race Course Live Horse Racing Starts
Posted on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007
Live horse racing in Atlantic City - even if it’s only for four days - is cause for celebration among local horse racing fans. For four days in a year, there’s more to do in Atlantic City than bet on casinos and play in poker rooms.
MAYS LANDING ??? Atlantic City Race Course, which these days serves primarily as a simulcasting betting facility, will stage live racing Wednesday with the first of a four-day racing meet.
The meet continues Thursday and returns May 2 and 3. The races begin at 3 p.m. Admission and parking are free. There will be seven races a day, all on the turf.
The meet’s feature race is the second running of the $50,000-added Tony Gatto Dream Big Stakes on May 3. The race is named in honor of the track’s longtime superintendent, who died in March 2006.
Officials of ACRC, who would like to increase the meet to 20 days next season, said they are encouraged by the attendance from last year.
The final day of the four-day meet drew about 5,300, which was the most the track had in the previous 10 years of live racing, according to track president Maureen Gallagher Bugdon. full story
