Belmont Stakes Winner Summer Bird Schools For The Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park
Posted on Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
After standing in the gate, the Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner Summer Bird opened up through the stretch during his gallop at Belmont Park this morning, and schooled between races in the afternoon as race horse trainer Tim Ice put the finishing touches on the colt’s preparations for Saturday’s $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1).
The 1 1/4-mile Jockey Club Gold Cup, the centerpiece of Belmont Park’s “Super Saturday”, will be the Summer Bird’s first meeting with older horses, among them Whitney and Woodward runner-up Macho Again and Suburban Handicap winner Dry Martini.
“I think he’s up to it,” said race horse trainer Tim Ice, who trains the son of 2004 Belmont Stakes winner Birdstone for Drs. Kalarikkal and Vilasini Jayaraman.
