Big Brown Draws Post 4 In The Monmouth Stakes September 13

Race Horse Big BrownBig Brown, winner of four Grade 1 races this year–the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Haskell Invitational, drew Post 4 for Saturday’s inaugural running of the $500,000 Monmouth Stakes Presented by IEAH Stable.

Raced at 1 1/8 miles on the Monmouth Park turf course, the Monmouth Stakes field of horses with jockeys and weight in post position order:

  2. Hotstufanthensome under jockey Jose Lezcano, 119 lbs.
  3. Shakis under jockey Joe Bravo, 121 lbs.
  4. Big Brown under jockey Kent Desormeaux, 120 lbs.
  5. Kiss the Kid under jockey Elvis Trujillo, 119 lbs.
  6. Proudinsky under jockey Ramon Dominguez, 119 lbs.
  7. Drum Major under jockey Kendrick Carmouche, 119 lbs.
  8. Get Serious under jockey Pablo Fragoso, 119 lbs.
  9. Fagedaboudit Sal under jockey Pedro Cotto Jr, 121 lbs.
  10. Ballonenostrikes under jockey Daniel Centeno, 119 lbs.
  11. Silver Tree under jockey Eddie Castro, 121 lbs.

Big Brown will carry 120 pounds as a 3-year-old racing against older horses and will be ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux, who has been aboard in all of the colt’s 7 lifetime races except the first, when Big Brown broke his maiden on turf.

The 3-year-old son of Boundary, Big Brown, made his horse racing debut last year on September 3 at Saratoga Race Course in a maiden race at 1 1/16 miles on the grass where he was 11 1/4 lengths in front of his nearest rival.

Race horse trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. said Big Brown will use the Monmouth Stakes as his final major prep for the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic, which will be run at 1 1/4 miles over the synthetic strip at Santa Anita Park on October 25.

A strong lineup of older turf runners is set to challenge Big Brown in Saturday’s race, headed by Shadwell Stable’s Shakis, winner of the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) at Saratoga. The Kiaran McLaughlin-trained 8-year-old goes from Post 3 with jockey Joe Bravo aboard. Shakis will carry 121 pounds.

Gary Tanaka’s Proudinsky, a 5-year-old son of Silverado, will go from Post 6 with jockey Ramon Dominguez in the irons at 119 pounds. Bobby Frankel trains the German-bred, who was sixth in the Baruch but won the Mervin Muniz Jr. Handicap (G2) at Fair Grounds in March.

Race horse trainer Bill Mott will saddle Peter Vegso’s Silver Tree in the Monmouth Stakes. The 8-year-old, who goes from the outside Post 11, is coming off a victory in the Oceanport Stakes (G3) over the Monmouth grass course. Jockey Eddie Catsro rides Silver Treet at 121 pounds.

Five Monmouth-based horses are entered, headed by race horse trainer Amy Tarrant’s Kiss the Kid, who drew Post 5 with jockey Elvis Trujillo aboard. The 5-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid has won on both turf and dirt at Monmouth Park, and is coming off a third behind Honest Man and Grasshopper in the Iselin Stakes (G3).

The other Monmouth horses entered are Main Street Stable’s Hotstufanthensome, who was a close-up third in the Oceanport; Dinan & Moore’s Get Serious, who has won two in a row on the Monmouth grass; Salvatore Racing Stable’s Fagedaboudit Sal, who won his first turf try but was seventh in the Red Bank (G3) last out; and Mac Fehsenfeld’s Ballonenostrikes, who was fourth behind Fagedaboudit Sal in the Bob Harding Stakes.

Other race horses entered are Kirk P. Sheehan’s Nightscape, whose last victory came in a claiming event at Penn National, and Dogwood Stable’s Drum Major, who returned after an absence of one year to run seventh behind Shakis in the Baruch on August 23.

The Monmouth Stakes is race 9 of 10 horse races in Monmouth Park’s September 13 card. Monmouth Stakes post time is 4:52 pm Eastern.
