Big Brown Has Final Work For Monmouth Stakes
Posted on Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Haskell winner Big Brown had his final workout this morning as he prepares for his next start in Saturday’s Monmouth Stakes, a 1 1/8 mile contest on turf at Monmouth Park.
A 3-year-old colt by Boundary, Big Brown breezed 5 furlongs over the Aqueduct turf course rated “good” in 1:05 1/5 on Tuesday morning.
“He went beautifully,” said race horse trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., conditioner of Big Brown. “Everything is set for him right now. I’m excited to watch him run Saturday.”
The Monmouth Stakes is slated to be Big Brown’s last start before the Breeders’ Cup Classic on October 25 at Santa Anita Park. Asked if a huge performance on the turf could lead to a start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, Rick Dutrow said, “There’s no chance we’ll enter for Breeders’ Cup Turf and Classic, just the Classic. It’s where we want to run.”
Big Brown sports a perfect one-for-one record on the turf, having broken his maiden at first asking last September at Saratoga on the lawn. Following that score, a majority interest in the colt was sold to IEAH Stables. Big Brown races for IEAH, Paul Pompa Jr., Gary Tolchin, Andrew Cohen and Pegasus Holdings Group.
Since his maiden score, Big Brown went on to take an entry-level allowance at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, before capturing the Florida Derby. He followed that up with a win in the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness Stakes. Big Brown rebounded from being pulled up in the Belmont Stakes by scoring in the Haskell Invitational, Monmouth Park’s signature race, on August 3.
As part of the condition of the Monmouth Stakes, the purse will be $500,000 should the 2008 Kentucky Derby winner, Big Brown, start in the race. Otherwise the Monmouth Stakes will be run for a purse of $200,000.
