Big Brown To Be Patched Up Friday
Posted on Monday, June 2nd, 2008
Belmont Stakes contender Big Brown will have his injured hoof patched up one day before running in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7, at Belmont Park.
The son of Boundary, Big Brown, who roared to victories in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, has been slowed over the past 2 weeks by a slight quarter crack to his left front hoof.
However, the 3-year-old is back to training and has galloped four times over the past five days.
Hoof specialist Ian McKinlay, who has treated Big Brown’s injury, said he will wait until Friday to attach an acrylic and fiberglass patch to the colt’s hoof.
“I’m not going to put a patch on it until Friday,” said McKinlay, who changed the steel sutures in Big Brown’s hoof two days ago. “The only reason for that is to let it dry up as much as possible. It is coming along well, and everything is on schedule.”
The unbeaten Big Brown is attempting to become horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.
After cruising to a 4 3/4-length victory in the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs, Big Brown won the Preakness two weeks later by an eye-popping 5 1/4 lengths at Pimlico, setting the stage for his potential date with history in the grueling 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes, the last and longest of the Triple Crown races.
