Big Truck, Tale of Ekati & Other Kentucky Derby Contenders Work at Keeneland
Posted on Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008
Eric Fein’s 2008 Kentucky Derby contender, Big Truck, worked a half-mile in :48.80 at Keeneland on Tuesday. Horse trainer Barclay Tagg described the move as a “maintenance work,” which he said he generally gives his horses 10 days after their race. Big Truck finished 11th in the Toyota Blue Grass (G1) on April 12 in his last start.
“He went a little faster that I wanted, but it’s fine,” Tagg said. “I generally like their maintenance works to be around :49, but it’s no problem.”
Big Truck currently ranks 19th on the 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) graded stakes earnings list with $194,500.
Another one of horse trainer Barclay Tagg’s Kentucky Derby entries, Charles Fipke’s Tale of Ekati, is slated to work five-eighths on Wednesday at Keeneland.
Visionaire Turns In “Maintenance Work”
Team Valor International and Vision Racing LLC’s Visionaire returned to the work tab on Tuesday at Keeneland for the first time since he finished fifth in the Toyota Blue Grass. With regular rider Jose Lezcano aboard, Visionaire went a half-mile in company with the four-year-old filly Scenery Change, both getting the distance in :49.60.
“He just did a little maintenance work here, and then he’ll do one more at Churchill,” said trainer Michael Matz about the Grand Slam colt, who was third behind Pyro and Z Humor in the Risen Star Stakes (G3) and won the Gotham Stakes (G3) prior to the Toyota Blue Grass.
Horse trainer Michael Matz did not know when Visionaire would be shipped to Churchill Downs, but said the colt would receive his final work prior to the Kentucky Derby on Monday, April 28 at the track.
Monba, Cowboy Cal Scheduled For Weekend Works
Toyota Blue Grass winner Monba and runner-up Cowboy Cal remain on schedule for their final works for the Kentucky Derby at Keeneland on Saturday or Sunday, said horse trainer Todd Pletcher.
“We’ll stay here through the weekend and move to Churchill next week depending on the weather,” Pletcher said.
