Posted on Sunday, June 29th, 2008
Black Mamba, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, rallied to beat Solva by a length Sunday in the $150,000 Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park Sunday, June 29.
The 5-year-old New Zealand-bred Black Mamba ran 1 1/4 miles on the Lakeside Turf Course in 2:01.25 and paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.40. Solva, under jockey Aaron Gryder, returned $9.60 and $7.20. Green Lyons with jockey Joel Rosario aboard paid $7 to show.
Horses that also raced in Hollywood Park’s Beverly Hills Handicap in order of finish: Forest Melody, Marzelline, Foxysox, I Can See, Double Trouble, Island Hop and Gotta Have Her.
Black Mamba had five seconds and a pair of third-place finishes - all in graded stakes races - since winning her North America debut in an allowance race last August at Del Mar. She had traffic problems while only losing by a nose in the Santa Barbara Handicap in her previous start.
Trained by John Sadler for owner Double Down Stables, Black Mamba, who has not been worse than third in North America, won for the third time in 19 starts. Black Mamba has finished in the money in 11 starts. The winner’s check of $90,000 boosted her earnings to $359,171.
