Breeders’ Cup Challenge Adds 4 Horse Races

The Breeders’ Cup announced today that 4 races have been added to the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge series, bringing the final total for this year’s schedule to 57, an increase from 24 races in 2007.
Winners of Breeders’ Cup Challenge races, which will be held in U.S., Canada, Hong Kong and Great Britain this year, will earn automatic qualifying berths into a corresponding race at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Three of the four added Breeders’ Cup Challenge races are automatic qualifiers for the new $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, which will be run at 1 1/2 miles for 3-year-olds and up. The “win and you’re in” horse races for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon are:
- Greenwood Cup at Philadelphia Park on July 19.
- Cougar II Handicap at Del Mar on July 30.
- Turfway Park Fall Championship (G3) at Turfway Park on September 9.
While the 1-mile Tiznow Stakes at Louisiana Downs on September 20 is the “win and you’re in” qualifying horse race for the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge began in Hong Kong on April 27 at Sha Tin Race Course where Good Ba Ba won the Champions Mile (G1), and qualified for the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf.
This year, the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge will start on July 5 at Monmouth Park with the Salvator Mile (G3) and the United Nations Handicap (G1).
A total of 17 race tracks will host Breeders’ Cup Challenge races this year, including for the first time, Woodbine Race Course in Toronto and Ascot Racecourse in England.
The Breeders’ Cup World Championships consists of 14 horse races and $25.5 million in purses. The 2008 Breeders’ Cup will be held in Santa Anita Park on October 24-25. Breeders’ Cup post times to be announced.
