Breeders’ Cup Challenge Entries: Salvator Mile Handicap & United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park July 4

Monmouth Park will celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with 6 stakes races, topped by the first two 2009 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races in North America–the $750,000 United Nations Stakes (G1) and the $250,000 Salvator Mile Handicap (G3)–where the winners will have a berth in their respective Breeders’ Cup races.
As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” program, the United Nations Stakes winner will automatically be part of the Breeders’ Cup Turf field while the Salvator Mile Handicap winner will have a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile field.
The Breeders’ Cup 2009 will be held at Santa Anita on November 6-7 this year.
The 1 3/8-mile on turf United Nations Stakes entries with jockeys and weight in post position order:
- Banrock under jockey Joe Bravo, 118 lbs.
- Strike a Deal under jockey C. C. Lopez, 118 lbs.
- Brass Hat under jockey Stewart Elliott, 118 lbs.
- Spice Route (GB) under jockey Eddie Castro, 120 lbs.
- Court Vision under jockey Garrett Gomez, 122 lbs.
- Lauro (GER) under jockey Jorge Chavez, 118 lbs.
- Presious Passion under jockey Elvis Trujillo, 120 lbs.
- Wesley under jockey Richard Migliore, 118 lbs.
- Better Talk Now under jockey Jeremy Rose, 118 lbs.
Topped by last year’s United Nations Stakes winner, Presious Passion, this year’s United Nations will offer a look at some of the best American turf horses in training. Invaders coming in for the major turf event include Brass Hat, a stakes winner at Churchill Downs last out, and Spice Route, who won the Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland in April for race horse trainer Roger Attfield.
The Salvator Mile Handicap entries with jockeys and weight in post position order:
- Runforthedoe (BRZ) under jockey Richard Migliore, 117 lbs.
- Smooth Air under jockey P. Lopez, 121 lbs.
- Solar Flare (ARG) under jockey Gabriel Saez, 119 lbs.
- Kiss the Kid under jockey Channing Hill, 121 lbs.
- Coal Play under jockey Joe Bravo, 117 lbs.
- Two Step Salsa under jockey Garrett Gomez G K, 121 lbs.
- Keep Laughing under jockey Eddie Castro E, 117 lbs.
- The Roundhouse under jockey Christopher Decarlo, 117 lbs.
The Salvator Mile field will be headed by Solar Flare, who won the Frisk Me Now Stakes at Monmouth Park as his prep for the Salvator Mile, and Smooth Air, who ran a close second to Bribon in the Metropolitan Mile (G1) at Belmont Park last out.
Monmouth‘s Salvator Mile Handicap and United Nations Stakes are races 9 and 10 in its July 4 card. Salvator Mile post time is 4:50 pm while United Nations post time is 5:20 pm.
