Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Evening Attire Wins Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philadelphia Park July 19

Evening Attire, under by jockey Jose Espinoza, romped to an 8 1/4 length victory in the $250,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philadelphia Park July 19 and became one of the Breeders’ Cup horses for the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Dirt Marathon October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
The 10-year-old trainee of Patrick Kelly, Evening Attire returned $6.40, $3.20 and $2.60. Second place Phil the Power with jockey Anthony Black paid $13.80 and $5.60. Barcola, ridden by jockey Kendrick Carmouche, is third showing $2.10.
A Kentucky homebred of Joe and Mary Grant, and Tom Kelly, Evening Attire raced 1 1/2 miles in 2:29.90 and broke the previous track record set by Laugh a Minute in January 4, 1992 at 2:31 flat. Evening Attire improved his career record to 15-16-9 in 69 starts and has earned $2,977,130.
Three in the Bag was 4th in the Greenwood Cup Stakes at Philadelphia Park followed by Solemn Promise and Bureaucratic.
