Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Hystericalady Wins Delaware Handicap

Posted on Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Hystericalady, ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez, won the $1-million Delaware Handicap (G2) on July 13 at Delaware Park and as part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Hystericalady is one of the Breeders’ Cup entries for the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.

Trained and co-owned by Jerry Hollendorfer, Hystericalady raced 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.37 and paid $7, $4.20 and $2.60. Four lengths back, Lemon Drop Mom, under jockey Jose Carballo, returned $13.20 and $6.20. The 2-to-1 favorite Unbridled Belle with jockey Ramon Dominguez is another 3/4 lengths back paying $2.80 to show.

Online Horse Betting“Everything worked out perfect for the trip I was hoping to get,” said winning jockey Garrett Gomez. “This is a classy mare. She will do whatever you want her to do and it is a pleasure to be on her. She always travels well for me. My main concern was she kicked when I wanted her to kick because the mile and a quarter was a question in some people minds.”

“Her last race, she went a mile and an eighth, and she was getting stronger as the race was going on. You never know until you go a mile and a quarter,” jockey Garrett Gomez continued. “So I started kicking her just like I was going a mile and an eighth just like last time and went ahead and went after the horse on the lead. I let her make the lead and when we turned for home, she hit another gear and lengthened her stride some more.”

The Kentucky-bred 5-year-old daughter of Distorted Humor, Hystericalady, increased her career record to 10 wins in 20 starts with a bankroll of $2,110,556.

Spring Waltz was 4th in the Delaware Park Handicap followed by Buy the Barrel, All Smiles, Santa Teresita and Kathleens Reel. Copper State, Moon Catcher and Over Under were scratched.

The Delaware Handicap is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series of horse races where the Delaware Handicap winner will be one of the Breeders’ Cup entries in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic to be held on October 24 at Santa Anita Park. Last year, Hystericalady lost by a neck to Ginger Punch in the same event formerly known as the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
