Trapped along the rail until deep stretch, odds-on favored Black Mamba, under a cool ride by jockey Garrett Gomez, finally found running room nearing the wire to get up and win the featured $400,000 John C. Mabee Handicap (G1) Sunday at Del Mar.
The New Zealand-bred mare, Black Mamba, returning to the scene of her first American triumph a year ago, needed a brilliant turn of speed to win by a half-length over a fast-closing longshot, the 24-1 I Can See, with pacemaker Passified hanging on for third, another three-quarters of a length back.
Foxysox was fourth in Del Mar’s Mabee Handicap field of eight older fillies and mares followed by Solva, Green Lyons, Ransom Captive and Placid Lake.
With her success in the Mabee Handicap, a race in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge, Black Mamba, owned by Doubledown Stables and providing race horse trainer John Sadler with his third win of the afternoon, became one of the Breeders’ Cup entries in the gate for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf Friday, October 24 at a mile and one-quarter on the grass at Santa Anita. Not eligible presently, she will have to be supplemented to the Breeders’ Cup at a cost of $300,000 to her owner, Richard Templer of Chicago, Illinois.
Black Mamba, a five-year-old daughter of Black Minnaloushe, notched her fourth victory in 20 career starts and second stakes triumph in a row, having won the Beverly Hills Handicap at Hollywood Park June 29.
Sent to the post at 4-5, Black Mamba paid $3.80, $3 and $2.40 while increasing her total earnings to $599,171 including the prize of $240,000 in the Mabee Handicap. I Can See returned $10.60 and $5.80, while Passified paid $3.20 to show.
Black Mamba ran the mile and one-sixteenth on the infield Jimmy Durante Turf Course in 1:47.11, stepping her final furlong in less than 12 seconds.
