Breeders’ Cup Challenge Results: C Karma Wins Natalma Stakes at Woodbine September 14

Posted on Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Race horse trainer Greg De Gannes may have 2 Breeders’ Cup entries after his filly C Karma won by a neck in the $150,000 Natalma Stakes (G3) at Woodbine.

SBG Global RacebookAs a 2008 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event, the winner of the Natalma Stakes automatically earns a position in the Breeders’ Cup field for the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on October 24 at Santa Anita Park.

A Florida-bred owned by Pamela Edel, C Karma held off a late challenge from 45-1 shot Freyga to capture the Natalma, her first stakes win. C Karma raced 1 mile in 1:40.74 over Woodbine’s ‘soft’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course and increased her earnings to $161,100 winning 2 of 5 starts.

C Karma, under jockey Jono Jones, returned $11.70, $6.20 and $4.40. Freyga, ridden by jockey Justin Stein, paid $28.80 and $13. Koonunga Hill with jockey Constant Montpellier showed $6.30.

For the first half-mile, winning jockey Jono Jones settled the filly C Karma about 2 1/2 lengths off the pace in fourth position. At the top of the stretch, jockey Jono Jones angled her outside for a clear path and she seized command inside the final furlong.

C Karma is a 2-year-old daughter of Exchange Rate, who is also the sire of De Gannes stable star Southern Exchange, a recent fourth-place finisher in the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile hopeful.

“For all of those listening from Three Chimneys, Exchange Rate is most definitely my favorite stallion,” said race horse trainer Greg De Gannes. “I always thought she was a high-quality filly. She’s a homebred. There’s nothing more pleasing (for an owner) than having a homebred jump up and do this.”

Jockey Justin Stein, who rode Michael Doyle trainee Freyga, said his filly just missed, “We had a perfect trip. At one point, when the other horses started stopping, I knew we had third. Then, I knew we had second. She just kept plugging away and didn’t give up. She might have been 45-1, but I knew she would run better than the odds showed. She ran a good turf race last time out and I expected her to be even better this time and she was.”

After the Applause was fourth in Woodbine’s Natalma Stakes followed by Laragh, Lady Shakespeare, Milwaukee Appeal, Panther Strike, Triple Flip and Poppin. Vegas Wedding was scratched.
