Breeders’ Cup Challenge Results: Swift Temper Wins The Delaware Handicap at Delaware Park July 19
Posted on Sunday, July 19th, 2009
Mark Stanley’s Swift Temper won the $1 million Delaware Handicap (G2) in front running fashion at Delaware Park Sunday, July 19.
With the Delaware Handicap win, Swift Temper earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic on November 6 at Santa Anita through the 2009 Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge series.
With jockey Alan Garcia aboard, Swift Temper won by 2 1/4-lengths after cutting early fractions of :49.83 for a half mile and 1:14.79 for the three-quarters mile. The 5-year-old daughter of Giant’s Causeway completed 1 1/4 miles on fast main track in 2:03.41 and returned $17, $6 and $3.80.
Icon Project, with jockey Jose Valdivia, Jr., finished second. It was another 1 3/4-lengths back to Unbridled Belle, the even money favorite in the Delaware Handicap field of six with jockey Richard Migliore, in third.
Previously, Swift Temper finished second beaten 3/4-lengths in the Fleur de Lis (G2) at Churchill Downs on June 13. Her only other victory this year was in the Sixty Sails Handicap (G3) at Hawthorne Park on April 18.
The Kentucky-bred Swift Temper trained by Dale Romans raised her record to 5 wins from 27 starts with earnings of $1,033,346
“She kind of rated in a stalking position and the fractions were moderate early and she just finished evenly,” said Unbridled Belle trainer Todd Pletcher.
Winning trainer Dale Romans liked the Delaware Handicap for Swift Temper, but he especially like the slow early fractions during the race.
“It seemed like a logical spot,” said winning race horse trainer Dale Romans. “We thought she would go a mile and a quarter and we thought it might even help. Obviously it did. I thought if Unbridled Belle did not go, we would be in front, but I could not figure out what she would do. We were planning on just getting comfortable where ever we were, but it worked out perfectly for us. When they left us out there two in front going that slow, I knew they were in trouble. I was looking at the fractions and it did not look like at any point anybody wanted to challenge us. I knew if it was going to be a sprint from the quarter pole home, we were going to have plenty left.”
