Multiple graded stakes winner Surf Cat heads a field of 10 race horses for Saturday’s 67th edition of the $300,000 San Diego Handicap (G2) at 1 1/16 miles on the main track of Del Mar.

Online Horse BettingAs part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, a victory in the San Diego Handicap horse race would guarantee the winner an entry in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile to be held on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.

Del Mar’s San Diego Handicap field of 3-year-old and up horses with jockeys and weight in post position order:

  1. Mostacolli Mort under jockey Tyler Baze carries 114 lbs.
  2. Surf Cat under jockey David Flores, 120 lbs.
  3. Rebellion under jockey Rafael Bejarano, 119 lbs.
  4. Magnum under jockey Martin Pedroza, 115 lbs.
  5. Racketeer under jockey Corey Nakatani, 113 lbs.
  6. Well Armed under jockey Aaron Gryder, 117 lbs.
  7. Global Hunter under jockey Mike Smith, 114 lbs.
  8. Tall Texan under jockey Victor Espinoza, 112 lbs.
  9. You Got Me Rocking under jockey Joel Rosario, 112 lbs.
  10. Mr Napper Tandy under jockey Joseph Talamo, 112 lbs.

The main competition for the Bruce Headley-trained Surf Cat, who will be ridden by jockey David Flores, could come from the Aaron Gryder-ridden Well Armed, trained by Eoin Harty and less than $150,000 from being a millionaire. Surf Cat is less than $45,000 short of being a millionaire. The San Diego Handicap winner’s portion of the purse is $180,000.

Eastern invader Rebellion, trained by H. Graham Motion, is looking for his third straight graded win. The 5-year-old British-bred son of Mozart arrived Tuesday afternoon for his West Coast debut, which will put Rebellion on his 8th different track since coming to the United States from his native land in 2006. In that stretch, Rebellion has been worse than second only twice. Rebellion has five victories along the way and gets the saddle services of jockey Rafael Bejarano in the San Diego Handicap.

Rounding out the field are Argentine-breds Global Hunter and Magnum, ridden by jockeys Mike Smith and Martin Pedroza, respectively; Mostocolli Mort, Tyler Baze; British-bred Mr. Napper Tandy, Joe Talamo; Tall Texan, Victor Espinoza; You Got Me Rocking, Joel Rosario, and Racketeer, Corey Nakatani.

The San Diego Handicap is the 6th of 10 horse races in Del Mar’s July 19 card. San Diego Handicap post time is 4:30 pm Pacific.
