Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Well Armed Wins San Diego Handicap at Del Mar July 19

Posted on Saturday, July 19th, 2008

WinStar Farms’ Well Armed, the 8-5 betting choice under jockey Aaron Gryder, reaffirmed his candidacy for the $1 million Pacific Classic with an impressive wire-to-wire victory in the $300,000 San Diego Handicap (G2) at Del Mar July 19.

As part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series of horse races, Well Armed became part of the Breeders’ Cup field in the October 25 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita Park.

Taking command shortly after start of the mile and one-sixteenth race over Del Mar’s Polytrack, Well Armed was beautifully-rated by jockey Aaron Gryder and had plenty in reserve in the stretch as he won by 1 1/4 lengths over 4-1 Surf Cat. Mostacolli Mort closed well for third, as did longshot Mr Napper Tandy who was fourth in the field of ten older Thoroughbreds.

The five-year-old gelded son of Tiznow trained by Eoin Harty, Well Armed, raced 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.57, fastest at the distance since the advent of the synthetic Polytrack last summer. The previous mark was 1:45.39 set by Sun Boat in the 2007 San Diego Handicap.

Earning $180,000 with his fifth victory in 16 career starts, Well Armed attained millionaire status, pushing his earnings to $1,030,803.

Well Armed returned $5.40, $3.60 and $2.80. He won the San Antonio Handicap last winter prior to finishing third behind eventual “Horse of the Year” Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin in the rich Dubai World Cup March 29.

Surf Cat, handled by jockey David Flores, paid $4.40 and $3.40, while 9-1 Mostacolli Mort, under jockey Tyler Baze, returned $4.60 to show.
