Breeders’ Cup Challenge: Woodbine Mile Stakes on September 7
Posted on Friday, September 5th, 2008
IEAH Stables and Partners’ Kip Deville is the 6-5 morning line favorite in a field of 8 race horses for the $1 million Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1) on Sunday, September 7, at Woodbine.
For the first time, the Woodbine Mile is part of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win & You’re In” series where the Woodbine Mile winner also becomes part of the Breeders’ Cup field for the Breeders’ Cup Mile on October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
The Woodbine Mile field of horses with jockeys and weight in post position order:
- Mulmur under jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva carries 117 lbs.
- Rahy’s Attorney under jockey Slade Callaghan, 119 lbs.
- Just Rushing under jockey James McAleney, 121 lbs.
- Kip Deville under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, 124 lbs.
- Wollemi Pine under jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, 117 lbs.
- Ice Bear under jockey Chantal Sutherland, 117 lbs.
- Palladio under jockey Richard Anthony Dos Ramos, 117 lbs.
- Ventura under jockey Garrett Gomez, 124 lbs.
Trained by Richard Dutrow, Jr., Kip Deville is on a three-race win streak. After finishing second to favored Shakespeare in last year’s Woodbine Mile, Kip Deville captured the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile at Monmouth Park in October.
After a lengthy rest, the grey five-year-old Oklahoma-bred son of Kipling, Kip Deville returned to the horse racing wars this season with a victory in Keeneland’s Maker’s Mark Mile in April, then most recently won the Poker Handicap at Belmont Park on July 13, registering a career high 109 Beyer (Daily Racing Form speed rating) in the process.
A career earner of over $2.6 million, Kip Deville, who will be ridden by jockey Cornelio Velasquez, comes from the same barn as high profile stablemates Big Brown, winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Haskell, and the recently-retired sprinter, Benny the Bull. Race horse trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. also saddled 2006 Woodbine Mile runner-up Rebel Rebel.
Juddmonte Farms’ Kentucky-bred Ventura, a 4-year-old daughter of Chester House, is the 4-1 second choice in the Woodbine Mile morning line and will be trying to become the first filly to win the Woodbine Mile. Trained by Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel, Ventura comes into the Woodbine Mile off a nose loss to Diamond Diva in the $750,000 CashCall Mile at Hollywood Park on July 5.
Ventura won 3 of 5 starts this year in the United States, including the Just A Game Stakes (G1) on June 7 at Belmont Park, after campaigning in England as a 2 and 3-year-old.
A Woodbine Mile win for Ventura would give race horse trainer Bobby Frankel his third Woodbine Mile victory, following Riviera in 2000 and Leroidesanimaux in 2005, tying him with fellow race horse trainer Neil Drysdale. North America’s leading jockey Garrett Gomez will be looking for his second straight Woodbine Mile win, after taking last year’s edition with Shakespeare.
Tucci Stables’ Just Rushing (5-1), trained by Sid Attard, who won the 2001 Woodbine Mile with Numerous Times, is one of 6 locals hoping to derail the two favoured invaders. The 7-year-old gelded son of Wild Rush, Just Rushing, has only had 3 starts this year, but comes into the Woodbine Mile off a career best performance in the 7 furlong Play the King (G2) on August 23, when he decisioned fellow Woodbine Mile field rival Wollemi Pine by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:19.3, while recording a 101 Beyer.
To be ridden by jockey Jim McAleney, Just Rushing has won 13 of 28 starts and over $770,000, proving to be one of the best claims in Ontario racing history after being haltered for $40,000 in November of 2005.
Race horse trainer Ian Black will saddle two Woodbine Mile hopefuls in Wollemi Pine (6-1) and Rahy’s Attorney (12-1).
Wollemi Pine, co-owned by Kinghaven Farms, Harvey Clarke and Greg Thompson, has taken 3 of 6 starts this year and was most recently second to Just Rushing in the Play the King. Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson rides the 4-year-old gelded son of Aljabr, Wollemi Pine.
Rahy’s Attorney, to be ridden by jockey Slade Callaghan, is a one-time winner in 5 outings this year, taking the Connaught Cup on May 25. The four-year-old Ontario-bred gelded son of Crown Attorney, Rahy’s Attorney, has been going long in his last 3 outings, and most recently finished fourth to Seaside Retreat in the 1 1/4 mile Nijinsky Stakes at Woodbine last August 4.
Owned by Ellie Boje Farm, Mitch Peters, Dean Read and Jim and Jean MacLellan, Rahy’s Attorney, with career earnings approaching $500,000, is unbeaten, however, in 3 one-mile turf starts, including the Vice Regent and Bunty Lawless Stakes last year.
Race hrose trainer Mark Frostad will send out Sam-Son Farm’s Mulmur (10-1), a 5-year-old gelded son of Smart Strike, who has taken 4 of 19 career outings, including the 7 furlong Jockey Club Stakes on July 19, when generating a career best 100 Beyer. Frostad and Sam-Son won the 1999 Woodbine Mile with Quiet Resolve and the 2004 edition with Soaring Free, the eventual Horse of the Year in Canada that year. Jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva retains the mount.
Also in the Woodbine Mile field is Augustin Stable’s homebred Ice Bear (15-1), winner of the 1 1/8 mile With Approval Stakes on August 10. The 4-year-old gelded son of Maria’s Mon, Ice Bear, also won last year’s 1 mile Charlie Barley Stakes on turf. Trained by Hall of Famer Mac Benson, Ice Bear will be ridden by jockey Chantal Sutherland.
Rounding out the Woodbine Mile is Palladio (20-1), a last minute entrant who will be ridden by jockey Richard Dos Ramos for race horse trainer Roger Attfield and owner Haras Santa Maria de Araras. The 6-year-old Lycius horse, Palladio is Canada’s champion three-year-old in 2005 and a 6-time winner.
The Woodbine Mile is race 9 of 11 horse races in Woodbine’s September 7 card. Woodbine Mile post time is 5:35 pm. Included in its undercard are: the $750,000 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (G1) at 1 1/2 miles on turf for 3-year-olds and up (7th horse race) and the $300,000 Canadian Stakes (G2) at 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-olds and up.
