Desert Code overtook Diabolical in the final strides to win the inaugural $1-million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint by a half-length at Santa Anita Park on October 25, 2008 Breeders’ Cup Day Saturday.
The longest shot on the board with odds of 36-1, Desert Code ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:11.60 under jockey Richard Migliore and paid $75, $30.80 and $21. Diabolical returned $7.60 and $5.20, while Storm Treasure was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $9.20 to show.

“I just dropped my hands early and let him relax because I knew they were going fast up front,” jockey Richard Migliore said. “I didn’t want to start to move until we crossed over the dirt, which is where a little bit of my experience riding out here helped. When we turned for home, I thought we had a chance of getting something. But when we got to the sixteenth pole, I thought ’shoot, we’re going to win this thing.’”
The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint was jockey Richard Migliore’s first Breeders’ Cup victory, while trainer David Hofmans earned his third.
It looked as if European invader Diabolical, who was making his 2008 debut in the United States, was going to reach the finish line first under jockey Frankie Dettori before he came up just short.
“It was a good run. That horse (Desert Code) came out of the blue and got us. I thought I’d won it. He ran super, just unlucky,” jockey Frankie Dettori said.
Fleeting Spirit was fourth in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita followed by Heros Reward, Salute the Count, True to Tradition, One Union, Get Funky, California Flag, Mr. Nightlinger, Rouse the Cat, Idiot Proof and Only Answer.
