Donativium rallied past fellow European invader Westphalia in the final yards Saturday to win the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf by a half-length Saturday at Santa Anita Park October 25 Breeders’ Cup Day.
Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Donativum covered one mile on the turf in 1:34.68 and paid $13.60, $7 and $5. Dettori delighted the fans with his trademark flying dismount in the winner’s circle.
Westphalia returned $5.40 and $3.80 as the 3-1 favorite, while Coronet of a Baron paid $5.40 to show.

In a wide-open stretch run, the gray British horse came flying home on the outside to become the first 2-year-old gelding winner of this race.
The late surge by Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Donativium, co-owned by Princess Haya of Jordan and Darley Stable, also spoiled the unbeaten run of Bittel Road, who had won his first three career races. Bittel Road had the lead as the field turned for home before fading to eight.
City Style was fourth in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita followed by Relatively Ready, Vaquero, Orthodox, Bittel Road, Ninth Client, Grand Adventure, Skipadate and Paddy The Pro. Mark S the Cooler was scratched.
