Breeders’ Cup Results: Midnight Lute Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita Park
Posted on Saturday, October 25th, 2008
Midnight Lute rallied from last to first to win the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Sprint by 1 3/4-lengths and made Breeders’ Cup history at Santa Anita Park by becoming the first race horse to be a 2-time Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner.
Named for recently retired Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson, Midnight Lute ran 6 furlongs with jockey Garrett Gomez aboard in 1:07.08 and paid $7.40, $5 and $3.20. In Summation returned $6.60 and $3.80, while Street Boss was another 1 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $2.40 as the 2-1 favorite.

Jockey Garrett Gomez rode his third winner Saturday, becoming the first jockey in the event’s 25-year history to win that many Breeders’ Cup races in a day. He also won the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on Friday, opening day of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint win was the day’s second for race horse trainer Bob Baffert, who had won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile with Midshipman earlier Saturday.
“Winning this race twice shows what a great horse he really is,” said trainer Bob Baffert. “He is a freak. He had a hock injury after he won last year, and we thought we were going to have to retire him. We X-rayed him after 60 days and it had healed.”
The latest victory for Midnight Lute seemed unlikely since he had run just once since winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last October over a sloppy track at Monmouth Park.
“He settled in really well,” jockey Garrett Gomez said. “He actually settled better without the blinkers on, and I had to ask him to stay up with the pace. He waited on my commands, which has been unlike him, even last year in the Sprint, which makes him that much better.”
In Summation was fourth in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Santa Anita followed by Fabulous Strike, Sing Baby Sing, Black Seventeen and First Defence. Cost of Freedom was scratched.
