Breeders’ Cup Results: Ventura Wins The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita Park
Posted on Friday, October 24th, 2008
Ventura passed favored Indian Blessing in the middle of the stretch to win the $1-million Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, the opening race of the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Day on October 24 at Santa Anita Park.
The 4-year-old filly Ventura stumbled at the start but took command late under jockey Garrett Gomez, moving past Indian Blessing with a powerful move in the final eighth-of-a mile to win by 4 lengths. Ventura covered the 7 furlongs in 1:19.90 and paid $7.60, $3.40 and $3.
Indian Blessing, hoping to become a repeat Breeders’ Cup winner for race horse trainer Bob Baffert, held on for second and paid $3.40 and $2.40. Zaftig was third and paid $4.

“When I heard that she broke slow, I was a little worried but when she was running on the turn, I felt a lot better,” race horse trainer Bobby Frankel said. “She showed a great, great turn of foot and she really likes the synthetic track. We didn’t want to move too soon into a very quick pace. He (Garrett Gomez) said he just waited until he felt she was ready to give it to him. When he let her run, she just exploded.”
The 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint win was the sixth Breeders’ Cup win for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, moving him into a tie for third with Richard Mandella and Neil Drysdale.
“She ran effortlessly. She’s the kind of filly that, once she makes the lead, will kind of pull up a little,” jockey Garrett Gomez said. “When we went by those horses, she was just cruising. She’s very tactical.”
“Around the three-eighths I had edged her out a little and she got into another gear,” said Garrett Gomez. “Down the stretch, I got into her a little (whip) to keep her focused on the race.”
It was the fifth career Breeders’ Cup win for jockey Garrett Gomez, who rode Indian Blessing in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.
Miraculous Miss was fourth in the 2008 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Oak Tree at Santa Anita followed by Tizzy’s Tune, Intangaroo, Magnificience, Jazzy, Lady Sprinter, La Tee, Dearest Trickski, Dream Rush and Tiz Elemental. Indyanne was scratched.
