2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner and Horse of the Year Curlin finished 2nd in his turf racing debut on the $500,000 Man O’War Stakes at Belmont Park, making a late charge but losing to 2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Red Rocks.
Trained by Brian Meehan for owner J. Paul Reddam, Red Rocks, ridden by jockey Javier Castellano, raced 1 3/8 miles on turf in 2:12.60 and paid $14.40, $4 and $2.90. Curlin, under jocky Robby Albarado, returned $2.50 and $2.10. 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf and the 2005 Man O’War Stakes winner Better Talk Now with jockey Ramon Dominguez came in third and paid $2.70 to show.
Curlin had won 9 of 12 races on dirt, including last year’s Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic as well as the Dubai World Cup last March. Curlin, looking at a run in the 87th Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in Paris in October, had won his 5 previous starts, most recently the Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs on June 14.
Race horse trainer Steve Asmussen said Curlin was pointed toward the October 5 turf race in France but the 4-year-old colt must first learn if he can handle the grass as well as he has the dirt tracks.
Sudan was fourth in Belmont Park’s Man O’War Stakes followed by True Cause, Grand Couturier and Mission Approved.
