Posted on Monday, November 19th, 2007
The 15-day Keeneland November 2007 Breeding Sotck Sale concluded Monday, November 19th with $340,877,200 in sales. The total is an 8.6% increase from last year’s 14-day gross of $313,843,800 and broke the previous high mark of $317,666,000, set in 1999.
Average price of $100,821, the second-highest in sale history, was up 1.1% over $99,728 in 2006. The median of $35,000 remained unchanged from last year.
In a quote from Keeneland’s press release: “This sale was strong from beginning to end; evidenced by the fact that we conducted 15 days of selling and averaged over $100,000 and equaled the record median,” said Keeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell, adding that double-digit growth was realized from session 11 through the end of the sale, while the RNA rate was a low 22.2 percent, down 3.5 percent from last year. “These figures indicate that we are selling more horses to a wide range of people, and that is very rewarding.”
A world-record price of $10.5 million was paid for a broodmare during the sale’s opening day, John Ferguson, on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, outbid John Magnier of Coolmore to buy Group 1 stakes winner Playful Act (IRE). The 5-year-old daughter of Sadler’s Wells was consigned by Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, agent for the dispersal of the Robert Sangster family’s Swettenham Stud.
John Ferguson, bloodstock advisor to Sheikh Mohammed, led the November Sale buyer’s list, acquiring six horses for $19,450,000.
Taylor Made Sales Agency topped the consignor’s list for their sixth consecutive November Breeding Stock Sale, selling 306 horses for $41,089,400.
“We want to thank our consignors and buyers for their support this past year, and wish them a very happy holiday season,” Russell added.
Keeneland sold 114 horses during the final session for $673,500, an average of $5,908.
The session’s top price of $32,000 was paid by R.L. Stallard for Sailing Minstrel, in foal to Borrego. Sailing Minstrel, consigned by Patricia Clark as agent, is the dam of stakes winners Navesink and Efficient Frontier.
