Cancer-Striken Lost In Fog Euthanized
Posted on Tuesday, September 19th, 2006
Three weeks after doctors found three cancerous tumors in his spleen and along his back, champion sprinter and Eclipse Awardee Lost in the Fog, was euthanized Sept. 17.
Greg Gilchrist, Lost in the Fog’s trainer, noticed his 4-year-old horse was in pain after their morning walk Sunday at Golden Gate Fields, his home track. Gilchrist consulted with doctors, and Lost in the Fog was put to death that evening.
“The cancer was just too far advanced, and we couldn’t get it turned around,” Gilchrist said. “He went downhill real quick. He was fine (shortly) before we had to put him down.”
The horse won 11 of his 14 career starts, earning $978,099 in a brief but spectacular career. His owner, 85-year-old Harry Aleo, rejected several offers to buy the colt.
The Northern California favorite won the 2005 Eclipse Award as sprinter of the year after winning his first 10 races beginning in November 2004.
After a six-month break, Lost in the Fog returned this year with a second-place finish in the Golden Gate Fields Sprint and an improbable victory in the Grade 3 Aristides at Churchill Downs on June 3 — a race he ran with an undiscovered football-sized tumor in his abdomen.
During a routine checkup for what Gilchrist thought was colic, doctors discovered significant lymphoma in the horse last month, with tumors near his spleen, kidneys and spine. Lost in the Fog underwent his first chemotherapy treatment Sept. 7 and was scheduled for another next week.
Lost in the Fog will be cremated, and Gilchrist expects his ashes to be transported to Florida.
