Chocolate Candy To Race In The California Derby at Golden Gate Fields January 17

Kentucky Derby hopeful Chocolate Candy, who ran third in the CashCall Futurity (G1) at Hollywood Park, is among the race horses confirmed for the $100,000 California Derby at 1 1/16 miles Saturday, January 17, at Golden Gate Fields.

SBG Global RacebookThe California Derby, Northern California’s first major race for 3-year-olds who have aspirations of getting on the Triple Crown trail, is one of the prep races for the 2009 Kentucky Derby. California Derby entries for the 1 1/16-miles test will be taken Wednesday morning.

Kentucky-bred colt by Candy Ride, Chocolate Candy won the $100,000 Real Quiet Stakes at Hollywood Park prior to running third in the $750,000 CashCall Futurity.  Chocolate Candy was beaten just 1 1/2-lengths by CashCall winner Pioneerof the Nile.

Chocolate Candy is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and owned by The Craig Family Trust.  The bay colt Chocolate Candy has 2 wins, a second and a third in 6 career starts and $202,500 in earnings.

Adriatic Moon, Axel Foley, and Merus Miami are also listed as definite California Derby entries.  Gallant Son is listed as “90%” probable for the race while Frumious is listed as a possible for the California Derby field.
