Cool Coal Man Wins Fountain of Youth; War Pass Still Undefeated

Posted on Sunday, February 24th, 2008

A pair of Nick Zito’s 2008 Kentucky Derby contenders dominated Gulfstream Park this Sunday giving him high hopes in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

In the 9th race at Gulfstream Park’s February 24 horse racing program, Cool Coal Man under jockey Kent Desormeaux won the $350,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) by half a length over Elysium Fields. Half an hour later in the 10th race, Breeders’ Cup Juvenile champion War Pass made his seasonal debut by easily winning the 1 mile allowance race by 7 1/2 lengths.

In the Fountain of Youth Stakes, a Kentucky Derby prep race, Cool Coal Man covered 1 1/8 miles 1:51.85 and returned $16.60, $8.40 and $6. Elysium Fields paid $8 and $4.40. Third place Court Vision paid $3.40 to show.

The Fountain of Youth Stakes winner hasn’t won the Kentucky Derby since 1995, when Thunder Gulch pulled the trick for trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Cool Coal Man’s connections are hoping they may change that this year on May 3 at Churchill Downs.

After almost 4 months of being sidelined, War Pass, under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, didn’t show any signs of rusting. War Pass was officially sent off at 1-9 on the Gulfstream Park toteboards and 1-20 overall. There was $763,758 wagered on the race, virtually all of it on War Pass, who covered 1 mile in 1:36.38 and returned the absolute minimum, $2.10 for the win.

Also trained by Nick ZIto, Web Gem returned $2.20 to place. Chadwell is third followed by Dylan’s Choice and Jet Run. There is no show betting due to the small field.

The next start for War Pass may be the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) at Tampa Bay Downs on March 15.

Both Cool Coal Man and War Pass are owned by Robert LaPenta.
