Southern Equine Stable’s Salute the Sarge, a dual graded stakes winner, heads a field of 11 entered Wednesday for Saturday’s 27th running of the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G2) for three-year-olds going a mile and a sixteenth on Keeneland‘s main track.
With a distance of 1 1/16 miles, the Coolmore Lexington Stakes is the final 2008 Kentucky Derby prep race to be held at Keeneland. The field for Saturday’s Coolmore Lexington Stakes, from the rail out, is as follows:
Atoned under jockey Edgar Prado carries 117 lbs.- Salute the Sarge under jockey Michael Baze, 117 lbs.
- Samba Rooster under jockey Garrett Gomez, 117 lbs.
- St. Joe under jockey Miguel Mena, 117 lbs.
- Racecar Rhapsody under jockey Robby Albarado, 117 lbs.
- Felon under jockey Julien Leparoux, 117 lbs.

Trained by Eric Guillot, Salute the Sarge was scheduled to arrive at Keeneland on Wednesday afternoon from his home base in Southern California. Salute the Sarge won the Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3) and Best Pal Stakes (G2) last summer.
Salute the Sarge’s connections are hoping to use the Coolmore Lexington as a springboard to a start in the 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) on May 3 at Churchill Downs. With $258,940 in graded stakes earnings, Salute the Sarge is among the top 20 earners in graded money pointing to the Kentucky Derby.
The same can’t be said for several other Coolmore Lexington Stakes entries with Kentucky Derby aspirations.
Jet Set Racing Stable’s Tomcito, third in Gulfstream Park‘s Florida Derby (G1) on March 29 in his U.S. debut, has $151,292 in graded earnings. Tomcito, a two-time Grade 1 winner in Peru, will carry top weight of 123 pounds and be ridden by Jorge Chavez. Tomcito will concede four to six pounds to his rivals.
Dogwood Stable’s Atoned, fourth in the April 5 Illinois Derby (G2) at Hawthorne Race Course in his most recent start, has $130,000 in graded money, and Jerry Carroll, Stan Kaplan, Ronald Plattner and Mark Guilfoyle’s Racecar Rhapsody, fourth in the Lane’s End (G2) on March 22 in his most recent, has $90,871 in graded earnings.
The Coolmore Lexington offers first money of $201,500, with $65,000 going to the runner-up, $32,500 to third, $16,250 to fourth and $9,750 to fifth.
