Crown of Thorns Will Miss The Kentucky Derby Trail Due To An Injury
Posted on Wednesday, February 20th, 2008
Due to an injury, one of the Kentucky Derby contenders and Triple Crown hopefuls, Crown of Thorns, winner of the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park in his most recent start, will miss the 2008 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 3.
Suffering a shin injury in his left front leg, Crown of Thorns will be sidelined for several months. “The shin is sore and it shows the beginning of a little stress fracture, so we had to stop on him,” horse trainer Dick Mandella said. “This is extremely disappointing because he was the perfect Derby horse.”
The injury will also cause Crown of Thorns to miss the other Triple Crown races: the 2008 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 17 and the 2008 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 7.
Crown of Thorns is a bay colt from the first crop of Repent, out of the Thunder Gulch mare Crowning Touch. Crown of Thorns was bred in Florida by Cloverleaf Farms II. The Robert B. Lewis Stakes win boosted his earnings to $149,640 and established him as one of the leading Kentucky Derby contenders.
