Curlin Goes Back To Dirt & Will Race In The Woodward Stakes at Saratoga
Posted on Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
Majority owner Jess Jackson announced Tuesday that 2007 Horse of the Year Curlin will run in the Woodward Stakes on August 30 at Saratoga.
However, Jess Jackson said the move shouldn’t indicate that he has given up hope on his experiment of running the 4-year-old colt on turf. He said he has yet to decide if Curlin will defend his title in the Breeders’ Cup Classic or run in the Breeders’ Cup Turf in scheduled for October 25 at Santa Anita Park.
“We are all looking forward to the Woodward and seeing this great athlete perform again before an American audience at this historic track,” Jackson said. “When we decided to race Curlin as a four-year-old, this is the kind of enthusiasm we had in mind for the fans and for the industry.”
There had been speculation that Jackson was preparing to send Curlin to Paris for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on October 5. Now that appears to be unlikely scenario.
Curlin made his turf debut on July 12, finishing second in the Man o’War Handicap at Belmont Park.
